Spam with pdf files attached

Just recently I've been getting a few spam e-mails with .pdf files attached.

I haven't really looked at them - they just get deleted.

But what's the angle with them?

My thoughts are this, a PDF file can act like an image, therefore can contain text that would clearly be banned by any spam program, because it is unlikely that the content can be read.
