hi all
my bike needs a top up with oil and the black plastic wrench has disappeared, whaaaa . any ideas what i can use to open please its tight.???
i am away from home and stuck till i can get to a dealer ... france . .tried with a flat end screwdriver and nearly had my leg.
thanks . maybe the edge of the laptop?
got to do something oil is now really low.
any suggestions would be helpful.thanks pb

Strewth - how tight is it for Gawd's sake ! Put a blunt instrument against one of the flat faces and tap !! good luck !! dp

Flag another 1200 BMW motorcycle diown and use his/hers.
Failing that, airbox to crankcase hose off at the airbox end and tip oil down that.
Failing that, lie bike on it's side and take rocker cover off the upper cyl head and tip it in there.
Failing that, strike a match and try to see how much petrol there is in the tank.......;)

Timpo.

I'm convinced I read somewhere that a 19mm nut will fit the recess - if you can find one, try it, then either epoxy it to a flat bit of steel bar to use it as a spanner, or find a 19mm bolt and a second nut, and lock the two nuts together on the bolt. Now use a 19mm spanner on it.

If it isn't 19mm, ignore the above... :blast

edit - or if you can't find a second 19mm nut, put the bolt through a 10mm or slightly bigger ring spanner, and use the nut to tighten the bolt in the ring spanner, then use that. Maybe. It really shouldn't be very tight, it is a plastic plug, after all.

How much oil does in need? Can you see the oil if you tilt the bike towards you?

If it's only a little below the sight glass your hardly "stuck" :thumb

hi
thanks for the tips, don't think i will be able to get a 19mm nut somehow for the moment ,just spent 15 minutes trying to get it undone ,i done it up well tight few months back ,had one stolen while in spain , messed 3 days up of a trip , some dodgy places in the world ,what would a low life want with a plastic plug . i know you can get lockable ones ,but the seals are not always that great , previous experience . next bloody trip will have a spare.and a key.
any more suggestions please keep them coming.
thanks pb:augie

the oil level ,you can only see when hot and tipped towards the side stand ,would imagine it will take a litre for sure.
sad thing is i have 2 litres strapped to the bike.plus half a empty litre can , must of left the key at the last stop 2000 k away .not going back:eek.
i did do it up tight.have a little mark wear i do it up to painted on.
