Is the unlock code that comes with a new Streetpilot for the unit itself or for the software.?? I'm still confused by the unlock code business. I have recieved my new Ver6 European City Navigator and would have expected the code to come with the software. I believe that you can use the software on up to 2 garmin products legally so where is the unlock code stored - on your PC or on your GPS RAM or on your GPS datacard???
Can anyone enlighten me a bit more (It is before lunch after all......)
The CD is free, it's the unlocking that may cost money. I suspect that to "control" the number of units the software can be used on you have to have the GPSR s/n and the unlock code for it to work. One without the other, means it's of no use.
The unlock code uses a combination of the mapping product identification and the internal serial number of an individual unit.
You can load your unlock code onto someone elses PC and it will let you display the mapping product that it is for (only) but it will only download it to the individual unit that has the right internal serial number.
The older monochrome Streetpilots do not have an internal serial number in the first place so a mapping product with an unlock code cannot even have the code generated (on Garmins website) in the first place.
Don't get too excited byt he 'Free' CS and CN V6 upgrade CD's. You can get as many as you like form Garmin but you need the original cd and software to upgrade to V6. It may be a free upgrade or may cost you to unlock the 'free' CD but you have to go to the Garmin website to get a new unlock for the upgrade CD.
if you still have it i would love it ... i have a new 2610 but came with v5 I am able to use the v6 but garmin have ran out for the time being ... i shall be happy to pay your costs...
