spare key prices?

i have just been quoted (chandlers of brighton) £80 for a spare key to be cut for my 04 GS, when i used the search facility it came up with a few threads with the cost around £25-27, has there been a major price hike or am i being conned!!

if anyone knows of a cheaper way to get a spare cut please let me know!

just phone another dealer and ask for a cost then go back to the original to know why such a price difference

I had this with a local dealer near me and the keys use to be around £30 but BMW has put the price up not the dealers they have been £80 for a couple of months now if dealers are still selling at £30 they are making a big loss and need to update there prices

I paid few months ago spare key 60 Euros, here in BMW shop in Belgrade. As I mentioned word "robbery", they told that the keys are being shipped only by DHL due security reasons, and that's the cause for that high price.

They aren't making a big loss. It means they are old stock being sold at the price they were when they were bought.

Go to a "proper" locksmiths who also deal with car locks, not a shoe repairer who also happens to cut keys. About £8 each.

Last time I bought a BMW 'chipped' key for an R1200GS in 2009 they charged about £25 (the bike had been supplied new with only 1 key plus the BMW plastic get you home key)

When I had lost a key on holiday for my R1200ST I had tried the proper 'locksmith' route in 2009 in Edinburgh. Despite trying quite a few locksmith they were either unable to source suitable blank keys even from their wholesaler or did not have the necessary machinery to laser cut BMW keys. I was able to get replacement keys cut for my Abus locks.

Moral to the above, always pack and take a complete second set of bike & lock keys with you on holiday unless you fancy being stranded abroad.

Yes the old style keys can still be cut at some dealers very cheap but the chip style key has to be ordered to your chassis number so will not/shouldnt be sitting in the old parts stock

£25 From Cannon Braintree (August 2010) - i phoned them up & collected a few days later - I was expecting £70+, but I assume the key was not specifically cut, only the coding added to the chip.

I thought a replacement key would be on par with a chipped car key which can be extorsionate.

Apparently BMW stopped supplying two lazer keys as standard to cut down on costs. I wonder how many owners bought a new bike and didn't realise they could get another lazer key for free?

Me too, 2 lazer & 1 plastic key supplied with new bike last july!

I believe it was some time in 2008, BMW realised the error of their ways and reinstated the supply of a second metal key as standard.

For the couple or three years prior to that if a customer requested a second metal key within 3mths of registration, it would be supplied FOC under warranty - most dealers would order it automatically as each bike was registered, but not all.

As to why the price rise? Who knows? Maybe the bloke in the key coding room at Bracknell got a payrise
