spare oil storage

I am hoping to venture into Europe soon, long overdue.

As many of us experience my R1150GS uses some oil. I am looking at potential storage solutions for carrying 2 litres of spare oil somewhere other than in my panniers / topbox.

I am using a Givi 45 ltr top box and the original BMW touring plastic panniers. I also have the SW Motech engine bars.

So far the storage solutions favour the flat rear of metal boxes.

Suggestions please and if you have photographs of the fitting that would be very helpful.

Buy any mineral 20/50 or 10/40 oil that they sell in Europe if you need it.

I use a 1 litre ali water bottle. A cheap jobbie. Works for me. Or if you want to cary 2 litres, get a stainless flask and strap that to your bike. But as Ian said, you can pick oil up as you leg it around europe.

Hit the rev limiter regularly. Hard through the gears. After a couple of days of riding like this, it will cease to use oil. Anyway, the sump is so large that on a motorcycle, where the oil never gets sloshed sideways on corners, you do not need to top up on a trip.

2014. Changed the oil at end of riding season on my 1200rt. Parked it for winter.
From then till end of 2015 when I changed it again, I did not even look at oil level.
Went round Europe including Austria, Italy, Slovenia.
Do not obsess.

They have garages in europe, and guess what ? they also sell oil in all sizes of containers just for people who may need to top up their engines..

Hmmm. The secret is to find a happy balance between obsessiveness and wilful negligence. These bikes can easily eat a litre of oil every 1,000 miles and I'd prefer to know how much oil is remaining in the sump before "redlining in every gear". After seeing an 1150 RT's melted innards after the owner had a similar non-obsessiveness attitude to maintenance, I would tend to be a tad more observant and get on my knees to check the oil level a little more frequently. or is irony lost on me

As Steptoe said, no need to carry oil around with you, Europe isn't the third world and 10/40 oil in litre bottles is usually available at every Arkwrights corner shop.

I like to use the same oil I have in the bike and like to take spare with me. The oil in europe always seems to be dearer than at home. A litre takes very little room and the convenience is worth effort of taking it with you.

I like to mix my oil. I don't really mind what oil I use as long as it's a high quality engine oil. The reason? You get the good out of all the different oils. I know you get the bad as well. I'm a glass half full guy. JJH

Yep, just what Rob said. Although to be honest I don't think I've ever needed it. But like the old saying goes I guess, 'better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.' If it gives you peace of mind and goes towards helping you relax and enjoy your trip, then it's worth its weight in gold (but you really don't need that 150 piece pocket set! )
All I carry is a spare final drive bearing & seal and 7mm allen key for the final drive, spare Hall sensor and alternator belt in a small waterproof click-lock box under the tank (in the empty ABS pump space), a rat tail puncture repair kit & small Airman compressor.................................. and a litre of 20/50

Iused to carry a litre from Halfords wrapped in two plastic bags poked in the side of panniers...

I use the engine for storing oil. Between services it might go from the top of the sight glass to the bottom, but it never goes out of sight completely - put more miles under the tyres, then it will stop using oil.

It comes with a couple of papery type disposable funnels and a couple of Velcro strips to stick it to the inside of a pannier or as in my case, a top box. I always carry mine cos it's so handy and I always have the 20/50 I use. There's a few spanners, Allen keys and screwdrivers in mine too. Each to their own eh.
