when i was riding today on a dry road i had to break hard and when i did a spray came up from between the dash and tank. this happened twice the second time i had drove through a damp patch a few miles before.all the brake pipe connections seem tight and it did not happen on the next 30 miles home.is it a build up of water on the front mudguard and if it is something else any ideas

If it had been brake fluid chances are you would have found it eating into the paint on your bike by now.

99% certainty its water collecting in the oil cooler / the headlight binacle. My Blackbird used to do something similar and steam like hell from all the water trapped in the radiator matrix. It used to pour out of the bellypan for a good two or three minutes when I stopped.

Oil cooler - I reckon, wash the bike whilst on the centre stand, then put it on the side stand - you'll be amazed at the amount of water that comes out of the cooler.
Can't be very good for long term corrosion if water collects there so readily.

i've got water being sprayed back at times but only when accelerating. yours is unlikely to be from the oil cooler radiator if it happened under heavy braking surely that would force it forwards. more likely you emptied the beautifully thought out  water reservoir around the fuel pump electrics.
