After reading a thread on here which recommended switching from Bosch spark pluds to Champion RC9YC plugs, I thought I'd take a look around. I came across this quote;

Q. What about Iridium Plugs ?

Apparently, BMW recommends Iridium for the GS. I picked up my bike from the 20 000 km service today (GS Dakar). The tech said he'd put in a Denso Iridium sparkplug. He said BMW has instructed the dealers to change to this plug when bikes are in for service, and that the OEM plugs are really not that well suited for the engine. And, yes, the bike runs appreciably better with the new plugs. More responsive, and the slight surging or stumbling I've experienced around 3.3k revs is now all but gone. They're perhaps the most expensive sparkplugs out there, but IMHO they seem to be worth it. Oyvind #1052, Norway

It appeared on THIS website. I'm sure there must be lots of comments and opinions on this subject.

I got some iridium plugs at the NEC show for my 1100.

I'd agree with your assessment of them. Even at £7 each they're worth it.

Kings new clothes..........

can you back it up with MPG improvement figures, meaning combustion is more efficient ?

or does it just 'feel' £14 better ... ?

it's just had a 20K service, i think it's a bit of a stretch to say it's the plug that make it go better.

To be fair, I've no numerical evidence to back it up other than the 'feel'.

Surging is almost completely eliminated (also verified by the mate who pointed out that it surged in the first place) and it generally feels better in the same way that cleaning the bike makes it 'feel' better - except I haven't washed it since I put the plugs in:)

To assess the 'performance' of the new spark plugs a bit more scientifically,remove them and replace them with a new set of the originals and monitor engine characteristics again.
Being one of lifes cynics,(don't tell me,show me!),it's a good job they didn't change the seat colour and tell you it's BMW's recommendation for curing surging!
I think the service has sorted your problems.
