Noticed this morning (as I was slowing down to 40 mph for a Gatso) that my speedo has stopped working. It was definately OK at the end of my previous ride the evening before as I can work out the mileage to my my rides to and from work and it matches the trip.

I did check my front pads and that involved moving the wheel left and right on full lock to see the wearso I could have disturbed something, I guess.

I think that it is a busted cable as it looks a little mis-shapen near where it meets the wheel.

What I would like to know is, what are the odds that it is the cable versus the clock itself? The bike is a 1999 R1100GS Anniversary and it has just done 25K miles and is ridden daily.

Also, is it an easy job to tackle myself? It looks it, I have reconnected the speedo at the wheel end before when getting a new tyre put on, but how simple is it at the clock end?

Any advice most greatfully received.

Easy to check & easy to replace the cable.
Takes about 15mins to do.
Disconnect cable at wheel end...
Remove screen & loosen clock housing to get at top of cable & disconnect (bit fiddly)....
Turn the cable at 1 end or other (long nose screwdriver) & if it doesn't turn at other end get new cable.... (£8ish I think) easy to thread through.
(If it does turn at the other end then it's your pick up (easy - spin the front wheel & see if the piece inside the housing rotates - replace) or the speedo & thats a whole different kettle of fish)

Happened on my 1100 at about the same mileage.....

Don't forget to oil your new cable.

Sounds like a cable - mine went at slightly less mileage.

Very easy to check and replace - Motobins delivered to me by return of post.

Problem found

Took the screen off last night, that bit is easy but unscrewing the cable from the speedo is very difficult. Then I took the cable off, from the hub housing and spun the wheel, I could see the hub gear turning so that was OK (that bit is £60!!). I turned the cable in the casing using a screw driver and nothing happened at the opposite end. So It's a new cable on order, only £12 so not too painful.

Thanks everyone.

Jon.
