08 1200GSA Non ABS model. My speedo failed yesterday. just fell to 0 and the odometer stopped working too.

I've checked the battery and it seems fine, so does anyone know where the sensor is on the Non ABS model?

Anyone else had a similar problem?

Check the plug is firmly pushed in the back first

The display is on and shows numbers such as temperature/clock etc. but no speedo, is that right?

I'm guessing the sensor is the same one as used for the ABS models rear wheel speed so it's tucked up on the inside of the FD unit at the top (need to line up a gap in the rear disk to see it). It's easy for that wire to get damaged if any work has been done in that area

Yes - display is on and working but odometer reading not increasing, and speedo needle not moving.

No work been done at rear wheel recently ?

I recently had my bike die on me in the rain and restart about 5 times before I got any instruments to work.

According to my GS911 the ecu was shutting down because of a short circuit in one failed ignition coil. The ecu was therefore not communicating over the bus with the instrument panel.

I'm not suggesting you have a faulty coil, but it probably needs diagnosing with a device that can give a little more detail eg a GS911 or a BMW GT-1.

It's certainly be worth plugging in a diagnostic at some point. Thing is if the oil temp and fuel level displays are working (are they GG33?) it means the ecu is talking to the display via the Canbus as (as far as I know) that's the only way the display gets it's info'.

If no realtime data are displayed it suggests a canbus or ecu problem, however, if the speed data alone aren't present it suggests a sensor or wiring problem with just the speed sensor sytem.

I think the odometer and clock (the time) readings are taken care of by the display so they could work OK regardless of the above fault, though the odometer milage won't increase.

The odometer data is stored within the main ecu and the instrument pod as a 'team' effort, I recently had my instruments out to wire accessories then failed to reconnect the instrument data cable plug before powering up the bike. I had no display (obviously) but my GS 911 incorrectly reported a very large mileage figure in the ecu, something like 118,000 miles (on a 2 year old bike.) Once I realised my mistake and powered down and reconnected my instrument panel, the GS911 then reported the correct mileage at about 11,000.

I think this is done by pairing the instrument panel to the ecu to prevent "clocking" of used bikes by simply replacing the instrument pod.

Take the tray out that holds the toolkit, under this is a connector, one end has a wire which goes to the sensor on the back wheel for the speedo. Check this hasn't become disconnected.
