Hi

I’m 60, out of work and struggling, any help would be appreciated. The speedometer on my BMW R1100GS (1996) appears to have stopped working, drive on front wheel turns, cable appears ok.

Is there a cheap fix, cheap non-standard replacement or maybe second hand part...Don

Somebody was selling a pair of clocks here recently - for an 1150, but I'm pretty sure they're interchangeable...

EDIT - ignore that - different part numbers (although I think it may just be a case of the trip zero wheel being different). Here's the advert...

The cable would be my first choice, I've had one snap off in the braiding and it looked okay on a visual inspection. Disconnect it at and ensure it turns at both ends when you turn it by hand at either end. Better still unscrew it at the clocks and whilst turning the front wheel by hand (in the right direction) make sure the cable is turning at the very top, that way you have eliminated everything except the clocks.

Undo the cable at the clocks and check it that way

Motorworks or James Sherlock might have a good used cable to save shekels

Motorworks

new cable link £15 plus p & p
used cable Link plus p & p

Steptoe has often said that BM prices are as good etc etc I don;t find that here but then again the Dealership up North is a bit of a law unto itself with no competition etc

cable appears ok

Cables fine, drive on front wheel appears ok to, speedo just stopped working...?

99% of these bikes The speedos do not just quit "usually" the cable breaks just by the mudguard / telelever

Not being rude We aren;t mind readers We can;t see what you saw or see how you checked it

Did you unscrew the cable at the clock and spin the wheel and see if it spins up there too?

In fact just pull the bottom bit out and see if you get a bit about 14 ~ 16 inches long If you do there's your answer

on the other hand If you get one big long bit the cables fine

I am not a total dummy, this is my 26th bike, admittedly I am far from a good mechanic tho (but neither was Mike Hailwood), but I am as certain as I can be its the speedo itself. I took the whole thing to bits top to bottom, ridiculously complicated just to change a f'in speedo cable. I thought it was the cable to (I have a spare), the cable is in one piece and rotates freely, no frays, pulled the inner out, its in remarkably good condition considering 97k miles on the clock and still fairly well lubricated (and I will lubricate it before putting it back together). The drive on the front wheel turns freely also appears ok, even tried to stop it turning (with my fingers) I couldn't stop it turning...!

Any 'good' ideas, anybody...

If you're 100% certain that it's the speedo then you're going to need a replacement. The one in Mike O's link looks cheap and the chap is open to offers. If you're not certain that it's the unit itself someone on here might be willing to lend you their working speedo as a test:nenau

BTW - I don't seem to remember having to dismantle the speedo to remove the drive cable - but then mine's an 1150:nenau

I think they are about £50 delivered from motoworks, used of course

but I think the RT ones are the same apart from changing over the reset button!

and I think the 1150rs one is the same, sherlocks will often give a discount if you phone up and ask!

Yes you have to take the headlight, plastic cover behind the headlight etc off to get to the bottom of the speedo, bloody stupidly complicated...

Seriously thinking about using my iPhone/app as a speedometer and looking into a gps speedometer, appears they are far more accurate and seem to be more sensibly priced...?
