Had a loook at a friends computer lastnight, the problem being that it will only connect to the net intermittently.

The USB and ADSL led's light continuously for 20 seconds (you can then connect)

After 20 seconds the ADSL led starts to flash for 20 seconds (You are disconnected)

This goes on for as long as you feel like trying to connect 20secs on 20secs off.

Tried reinstalling modem, still the same, tried different ADSL filters, still the same.

Have not contacted BT or Tiscali yet.

Will be taking a new modem up this evening if that doesn't work I'll contact BT etc, but if anyone has had the same problem before and fixed it I'd appreciate the help.

The most common cause of dropped connections is a dodgy telephone socket, especially a home installed extension. If possible, connect into the BT master socket.

I'd take my laptop along too, just to eliminate a problem with the friend's hardware altogether (might have a dodgy USB port/controller or a myriad of other issues).

If it comes down to contacting Tiscali customer services then good luck :eek

If he needs a new modem then I've recently bought one of these:

It's very good. You can connect 2 PCs to it (1 USB, 1 ethernet) or do as I have done, plug it into the Linksys wifi router I had in my last house which had cable internet.

Those Alcatel ADSL modems always seem to give problems

You might try d/l the latest s/ware upgrades for the deices.

Or geo to PC World and splash out £35 on DECENT MODEM/router.
