SPIII GPS for £150 !!

Voice instructions

I have recently recieved the Street pilot III. The advert talked about voice messages, but does it need an external speaker plugged into the back to work. If not can someone let me know how to get it to work.

Also what is meant by waypoints.........I am sure that I will eventually come to grips with the GPS stuff.

Yup, an external speaker, or headset is required.... I tried it out balanced on the dash of my 5 series whilst it was plugged in with the supplied ext speaker/power cable - Most impressive!.

Part of the computer installation allows you to change the 'voice' to a UK accent - If you're EVER going to use the voice prompts I strongly recommend this change - The US accent voice is borderline unintelligible to my ears :)

Waypoints? As it says really, but I'll let someone far more gps experienced than me explain the term better!

Thanks Rob.
I have not recieved any mic with mine. Was yours recently bought on offer from GPSW?

Anyone else not had an external speaker with the offer from GPSW Looks like I may need to make a call to them

Cheers

It was indeed bought from GPSW on their offer deal. The ext speaker is built in to the 'fat' part of the cigar lighter plug which *should* have been included with the SPIII.

Just ordered one...

Just got to work out what to do with the iPaq that I was using - which went belly up last week.

Anyone want a knackered iPaq? needs a new processor board at £180 or so! (may try my luck on Ebay....

+ a GPS reciever
+a RAM mount

Got mine the other day and tested it in the car. So far so good. Couple of quick questions I have:

Am i entitled to upgrade to City navigator v8 free of charge as it came with v7 - if so do i just get in touch with Garmin in the UK?
Presumably I need to get an adaptor that has a 2.5 mm jack on the end to connect my earpiece?
If I plan a route in City navigator and transfer it to the GPS, does it also transfer the associated maps or do I need to have the maps loaded first?
Thanks.....

Thanks Hew

Jeez, didn't think I was ever going to get that right...!

I think those insuctions from Garmin are still missing some detail for anyone (like me) who likes to follow step for step - if anyone else is struggling pls feel free to drop me a PM.

You are a lucky fellow as I hear that on this demand, they will be gone in a day or so  but will have more coming soon. I still have some mounts remaining and those waiting from last weekend are being sent out :D

Arrived today.

Impatience is mounting though, as it comes with a serial lead and my laptop only has USB ports, and I've left my USB/serial converter on site..... and I can't get the mapsource to unlock  so I was intending to use the web update facility, which requires the unit to be connected to the PC for you to be able to download the software!

Have to say I'm a little disapointed with the RAM mount! With the big disk thing screwed to the back of the mounting cradle, you then can't use the standard Garmin mount, as the RAM bit fouls the tilt mechanism... still nothing that can't be fixed with a hacksaw and a file!

Anyone sucessfully upgraded to V8 yet? how do you go about it?

headset

Now I have the Street Pilot III, any advice on what headset I need and wher I can get 1 from.......... :)

Recieved mine yesterday and spent over 6 hours continually installing the mapsorce and then uninstalling it as it wouldn't work. Finally thought I had it sorted but get the followimg error message when I click on mapsource after it opens:

At: 5/3/06 5:17:52 PM (UTC)
OS: Windows 98 SE
Processor: Pentium, RAM: 129476 KB
DSK_FIRSTBOOTRECORD.CPP-268-4.10

Sent emails to Garmin but note states it will take 5 to 7 days for a reply.
Tried to contact Garmin Europe and now been on hold for exactly one hour!

Totally p!ssed off with Garmin and wished I had never bought the damn thing. Would be willing to sell it on to anyone else if this is what support from Garmin is like. :(

I have just ordered one of these and am expecting delivery tomorrow hopefully. Can someone give me an idea of what 128mb will provide - eg is it enough to fit France from Le Havre right down to Nice? I didn't really think about what I wanted, figuring that if I hung around too long I'd miss out on the deal like I missed out on a Quest. Is it going to give me, for example, the whole of Dorset on the card. Will it tell me where to find petrol for less than 95p a litre........

128 mb card for a SP111 will take most of England and a bit of Scotland or most of France ,or all of Spain etc . It's best to decide your route first and put selected areas on or buy an extra card and another or , carry your laptop :thumb

Hi Sid,

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(

I know you're alot p*ssed off with it at the moment! (to say the least!)

I've know idea what you've done to resolve this issue so far so....

I would recommend that as you appear to have mapsource installed in some fashion, that if you haven't already, you download and install mapsource 6.10.2 and install that over your existing installation. Available from here:

http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Else, have you followed Hew's post from earlier in the thread?

Let us know how you get on - The SPIII is an excellent unit, and mapsource - when it installs! :spitfire - is a very handy piece of software.

Regards,

-Rob

Mount arrived this morning!

Unit ordered last Wed, arrived the next day minus lead and mount. The lead arrived the next day.

The saga continues.

Big thanks to Rob above:) Managed to download updated version and then sort out hard drive to read from correct directories etc. Then managed to finally open mapsource and transfer the files to the data card.

Then tried to switch on the unit and nothing happened :( Thought my rechargeable batteries might be duff so put them all on charge again for another hour. Tried again and still nothing from unit. Got on bike and rode 14 miles to supermarket to buy new set of duracell batteries. Yet another hour later, back home and fit new batteries, and still nothing!!!!

Phoned GPS Warehouse who were very helpful. "Sounds like its faulty then" they deduced. They admitted that they have had others that have failed to work from this batch (NB they are "re-conditioned" units).

Just leaving now to get to post office to send the whole package back to them. Wasted nearly two whole nice sunny days trying to get this damn thing sorted out.

Yes Rob, you were correct in realising that I was extremely p!ssed off!!
