After researching this forum, I have finally decided to buy a SPIII unit on E-bay. Although 2610 looks better and is probably a better piece of kit, I could not really justify the extra spend.

As I am keen to get this new toy mounted on my bike (1200GS), I was hoping you guys could help me by letting me know what (and where) I need to buy the best fitting and connection accesories.

Even better if someone got these things for sale and I can broker a deal.

If I get the feed back that I am looking for I will make the £10 sponsor donation to this site.

Many thanks in advance.

Hit the Link button and then go to the GPS information, there is a link to a company that do RAM mounts for all manner of GPS systems.

Oh really? We don't do bribery here. If you do like LSnooty says you'll find much more than 10 quids worth of feedback. So pay up. :)

Spanfly,

You live in Chelmsford so pop and see Ronnie at Cannon's and get yourself the BMW mounting kit that was designed for the Motorad I BMW GPS system (same as SPIII).

You will need the unit that fits on the bike, possibly a new cradle and longer handlebar monting studs that allow fixing. Also you will need the power lead (that's the expensive bit £60 ish and book it in for fitting.

Ronnie know's all about it

Job done!

Cheers

Don't buy any SPIII or 2610 off eBay unless you are sure that:

  • it has an Atlantic basemap
  • You get the mapping discs with the unlock codes
  • You get confirmation from Garmin that the vendor has the unit registered in their name and that the vendor will transfer the unit's registration to you

You can check if it has an Atlantic basemap by removing the datacard and turning the unit on. If you zoom out to say the 20 mile scale, you should be able to see all of the UK's motorways and A roads (same for anywhere in Europe and Africa). If you can't see these roads, try panning over to USA or Canada. If you can see their main roads, it is the Americas unit and you shouldn't touch it!

The mapping discs should be European City Navigator v6. If it's v5, then it's at least 12 months out of date (v7 will be released any day now).

If you cannot get the unit registered in your name with Garmin (by reference to the unit's serial number), you will not be able to obtain updates of City Navigator.

That's got to worth ten quid!

Just looked at a few on eBay - most of them look well-dodgy!

Simply ask the vendor 'Does your SPIII have a European (Atlantic) basemap?'.

Don't part with your cash until you have verified for yourself that the unit is what the vendor says it is!

Words of wisdom......Ebay & SPIII do not go togther....sorry!

You will find, if you are prepared to search around, enough UK outlets now selling the SPIII at very low prices since the launch of the 2610.

Save yourself the hassle and don't buy one from e-bay.

Many thanks for the advise.
Well worth the tenner which has now been donated!!!
Hope to get my logo soon....??

It seems you guys did get it right!
Ebay deal has now falling through - well dodgy seller!!

Will now look at retailer for the SPIII prices or might actually buy a Quest. Although the screen is much smaller - it seem to have the same functunalities and does not need the hard wire power supply.

Thanks for your help - hope to see you guys on the road some time! Anybody foing on Abelrider ride out on Sunday?

Will be at Cannons on Saturday morning as well as I need screen repaired.

Finally made up my mind!
Will splash out on the 2610.
I went to Maplin and had a play with both Quest and 2610.
2610 far more user friendly and screen seize does matter!!
The only negative point of the 2610 is the lack of battery.

Now I only have to decide on the mounting solution!!

From what I have seen, the motorrad concept solution looks very solid, easy to instal and most importantly provides the ideal viewpoint.

Some of you raised some concerns with regards to vibration and water when mounting the unit in this position. However this was denied by others.

Can someone convince me one way or the other.

Many thanks.

2610 at Maplin £649.99
2610 at Aspidshop £553.54
Anyone got a better price?

2610

Try www.sportextreme.com Bought mine there- brilliant service 4days from Demark to Northern Ireland. £538.00 all in.

Bought my mounts and bike cradle plus power lead from www.ram-mount.co.uk
Bought my headset lead (from autocom) to go with my autocom head set. If you don't have autocom there are other options open to you.

Bought the Migsel mount (for 1150gs adv) from Michel in belgium. Everything works fine. Also bought spare mounts from Ram UK for handlebar use if I change my mind about current position of insatllation.

Speak to Steve Dickinson at Ram UK Very knowledgable and extremely helpful. Tel: 020-8755-2881.

Fianlly if you want to read some excellent reviews about all things GPS including review of 2610 log onto www.gpsinformation.net and you could also use www.pocketgps.co.uk

Hope that this is not too verbose a reply and will be of some use to you.

Cheers

Richie, if anything goes wrong, just send it to Garmin, I’m sure you can rely on them.
