Rob.....when I was clearing out my desk drawer the other day I found some stuff that might help.......haven't tried it yet though.....it's printable overhead projector acetate.......it's quite clear yet has a very matte finish on one side designed to take ink from an ink-jet printer.......

I'll cut a bit out tonight and plonk it on my spIII screen to see what it looks like

I suggest you try getting some water on the matt side. Last time I used on in place of a normal acetate sheet it went all sticky (ooh er missus..)

Wish I could give you some advice, but I can't think of anything.

I used a SP III for two years, had no problems with it. The slight blue reflection you are seeing is very desirable - this is the anti-reflective coating. But, this should not be obvious to you when you are looking at the unit - if you can see the blue coating, then your viewing angle is wrong, adjust the tilt (grossly) so you don't notice the blue coating. It is a 1/4 wave dichroic coating, pretty much the same as what the optometrist puts on prescription glasses when you ask for an anti-reflective coating.

'bout all I can suggest is that you adjust the tilt, and try making slight changes to the contrast. Here's a photo of how I mounted my SP III, perhaps this might give you some ideas:
