My old 1100GS suffered horribly from wheel spoke corrosion, even though I finished most winter rides with a careful washdown. It wasn't enough, The wheels paid dearly for my laziness on the black nights when I felt too knackered to get the hose out .This year I traded in for a mint 1150 and I don't want the same thing to happen. It's likely that I won't be doing so much winter riding now, but I wondered if anyone had used a really effective protective coating that I could apply now and remove once all the salt has gone. I seem to recall a spray on wax stuff that looked pretty manky after a couple of winter months, but it kept the brightwork in good shape.

What year was your 1100?

IIRC, early ones had steel spokes and un-anodised rims. Later 1100's and all 1150's have stainless spokes + anodised rims.

Mine have survived 4+years and 30K miles without a problem. All I do is use a non-corrosive wheel cleaner (BMW car wheel cleaner) and then a coat or two per year of normal wax-polish.

Doing the above has even kept the spoke nuts on the hubs from corroding.

had the same problem when i bought my 1100 five were nearly rusted through replaced the lot with stainless spokes from motorworks wheels were rebuilt by hagons the same people that do the suspension units at the time (two years ago) they were the only wheel builders who would touch g.s. wheels, good luck!

i have never seen s/s go rusty mut my spokes on my 1150 are rusty:spitfire

I just use some grease mixed with diesel, then brushed onto the spokes, wash it of using a degreaser, watch that it doesnt get onto the discs, i do all the places attacked by salt, bike looks a dog after a few weeks, but comes up as new in the spring

I bought a mint 1150 at Christmas, it was described as indistinguishable from new and it was. The guy I bought it from swore by Scottoil 365 anti-corrosion protection and I've continued to use it. Didn't like it at first because it dripped all over the place but soon evaporates and leaves no trace. Ultra easy to use and prefers being on wet surface though it does say to avoid brake discs which I mask with a piece of card cut to shape. Its no substitute for elbow grease and care, but seems to work. I also bought SDoc100 from Heine Gericke this week which makes anti-corrosion claims and cleans as well. Spray on dry dirty bike and jet wash off, even gets grease off. Haven't used it yet but it is highly recommended by those that do. 3000 miles worth of muck from France and Spain still to come off so that'll test it.
