My GS12 came fitted with wire spoked wheels, but the rear one is slightly buckled(like this from new)-ie when wheel is turned there is a noticeable kink, although this does not affect the ride quality.
Is this common enough with spoked wheels?Does any one else have the same?

bent from new?...
that sounds like a warranty issue, cut and dried...

Although the spoke wheels on the 12GS are suspect... I have 1 riding mate who after 3000miles and some *light* offroad use on 2 occasions had a +/- 10mm horizontal and 3mm vertical kink in his rear rim that rumbled while cornering... AND another mate who's front and rear rims were bent around 6mm or so after similar light use... AND if I recall correctly it was CanyManZA who posts here who had his rims rendered useless on his 1st offroad trip on the GS... the fourth member of our local 12GS group has perfectly straight alloy rims after riding the exact same routes an mileage as the rest of us...

personally I think it's BMW's design to allow tubeless tires on the spoked rims that means that the outer part of the rim where the spokes attach protrudes too much and is susceptible to being bashed and damaged with normal use... The pessimist in me is inclined to say that BMW know this which is why they've instructed dealers to say that the spoke wheels are not repairable to avoid having hundreds of repairs to bent rims under warranty...

BTW: mine came with spokes... but I've just ordered a set of alloys instead...

shouldnt be, but spoked wheels will never be as true as cast alloys.

Plasmatron - tried to PM you but you have them turned off.

Do you want to sell your wire spoked wheels? If you do, please PM me or email me on rik.griffin [at] denbridgemarine [dot] com or the email address in my profile. Thanks :)

When riding, have someone ride behind you and watch your rear wheel to see if it's perfectly round. A riding mate of mine informed me that my wheel was out of true.

I recently took delivery and my rear wheel is out of true. BMW Canada has agreed to replace the wheel, admitting that on the pre delivery inspection, the wheels are not inspected to ensure they are perfectly round.

I did not feel any unusual vibrations while riding.

The rims on wires are normally butt welded so there is a good chance of a small kink, but only for about 30-50mm each side of the joint. The rest of the wheel should run true.
