Spokes

I am a new tosser, Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the spokes on a 1100 GS with stainless ones? can this be done by removing the old ones one at a time and repacing them with the new ones?

Yup....try it....they are a b@st@rd to get out . I had a couple of damaged spokes and had to work long and hard to get them to shift. Doing a whole wheel..... Good luck indeed.

I thought the spokes were stainless

Spent hours cleaning "black" spokes with wire wool and wd40 and they came up like new. Are they different on 1100 models? I have an 1150

I do have some spare spokes for the front and rear if you need a couple.

Re my earlier message.Speak to other pro wheelbuilders about rebuilding of Gs spoke wheels and it will probably put you off having a go yourself.In fact,I rang most of the well known companies and most of them said something about "off" when I mentioned them having a go at mine.Doug at Devon RC admits he had problems setting up a jig etc but once he got the hang of it, he was confident.I certainly cannot fault his work on my wheels.I did chop my original spokes etc with bolt crops and yes, some of the nipples were a git to get out (Drill/punches etc).One company I spoke to who has a real good reputation and had done wheels for me before, from other bikes, said he had had a go at GS spoked and gave up after 2 weeks !!!I even talked to BMW themselves and they said that if a spoke wheel gets taken to them to be straightened, they advice throwing it away.Anyway, ring Doug at DVR, they do have a website.

martin why not just buy a set of used wheels with ss spokes and maybe sell yours on.

i think that GS spokes are chromed steel & ADV are stainless and both have rusting nipples.

The spokes on my 93 Gs100 were s/s but the nipples were plated.(well, plated in rust actually).DRC advertise that they are the only people in the UK that can supply s/s Nipples, as well as the spokes.(other companies only supply nipples in plated)
In theory, it may not be too good engineering practise to use S/S nipples with the s/s spokes.However, if you aint offroadin, things should be ok.Mine have been ok certainly, and its good knowing the buggers wont rust again.

Thanks for all the spoke info, I have been put off trying the job! will try cleaning them, they appear to be galvanized. If I cant get them looking good I will go the alloy wheel route.

be aware that s/s reacts badly with ally and corodes it through electrolitic reaction so keep them clean and if road salt gets on them wash a.s.a.p to stop the reaction
