SO I sprayed my panniers silver, but today noticed the silver rubbing off - not 'coming off' but more leaving a slight silverly residue on my hands

Thinking of spraying with a matte clear lacquer to 'lock it in' but can't seem to find a matte finish one.

Or, should I try to scrub it off and then re-spray with a better matte- finish spray paint?

Just don't want the same situation of having the silver rub off

Thoughts?

Hi,
I don't know off the top of my head what they are made of, my guess would be Polypropylene (PP) or maybe High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). I don't know about the HDPE but if they are Polypropylene (PP or number 5 in a recycle logo)

then you have to "flame" the surface before you paint it or the paint will peel off. You can do this by gently and carefully playing a blow torch flame over the surface.
I know this because I make PP bumpers where I work and every one has to be "flamed" before it goes into our paint plant

If it´s some sort of metallic silver so they usually are two-coat colors so you have to put some sort on clear coat on top of it. The color mass alone is not durable against nothing.

Matte clear coat you can buy from every real car paint dealer. They can even make you a two component matte clear coat.

Thanks for the advice folks. Think I've massively under estimated this job!

Its not something I would do. I've the system panniers. they suit my purposes.. and they ain't half bashed. painting them.. would on the face of it be a nice idea. but.. as soon as they get bashed again... the black will show through and look even worse.

so.. to my mind, its pointless. when they get bad.. a quick spray of 'back to black' and voila.

I got them cheap and to be honest am after a slightly 'used' metallic effect to match my aluminium Trax topbox, so a few nicks, scrapes and 'wear' is ok by me.

Just want to stop the sodding paint from rubbing off in my hands :nenau

I reckon they won't be dry yet. Its fooking cold out.

Put them in your house for a few days for them to go off.

Hmmm... hadn't thought about that... maybe needs to 'cure' for longer to harden/adhere

thanks for the tip.

Found a can of Rust-oleum 'Crystal Clear' in semi-gloss - has done the trick! Satin finish and now the silver doesn't come off on my hands.
