UK again Pah!..
I have had a set of Hyperpro springs hanging around for a few months and want to fit them in preperation for the summer break, I have a pair of Showas with 6000 miles to put them on, will I need spring compressers or can it be done by hand?

This is on an Adventure.

Cheers

Don`t even contemplate trying to change shock absorber springs without a spring compressor unless you like the thought of potential blindness or chest injury....combined with large chunks of knuckle missing.

Someone may tell you that they`ve done it without....yeah..ok..right.

They were lucky.

That is what I suspected, the moment I was told I just needed some "big screwdrivers" by a local source of knowledge I had a bad feeling, as you say, best to use the right tools.

Cheers

Woo, what happened to the old fashioned sort that were about 20 quid for two threaded bars and some bent bits on the ends...

i think it would be quite hard to get that sort of tool onto a GS shock due to the pitch of the spring. much paint removal at the very least.

Good point, they are progressive springs so I would only be able to compress the top section, well I guess plan B is find a local spring shop that can swap them over in the Milton Keynes area

I just fitted a new rear shock to Clare's fazer 600, and beforehand I wound the preload adjuster right off to grease the thread. With the adjuster backed off completely, the spring was under no compression at all, and could just be removed by hand.

Either it's fecked already, or that's a more easily servicable design :D

that works on my WP airhead shock but does not work on the ohlins unit fitted to my 1150 because of the hydraulic pre load adjuster which is under tension with minimum pre load dialed in.

can't speak for other makes.
