Hi,

As part of my preperation for a long trip on my bike I am changing the chain to a DID item and will also be changing the front and rear sprockets at the same time but am confused as to which sprockets to get. I have searched through the long list of chain and sprockets threads that Tim has put at the top of this section but that has left me even more confused (I blame old age myself :) ).
As far as I can see there are three choices of sprockets:
  1. BMW originals from either my dealer or Motorworks
  2. Touratech items from err TT
  3. Wunderlich sprockets from somewhere
I don't wish to change the ratios from the original (it has taken me forever to get used to them as they are :D) but was wondering a) what peoples experience of the above are and b) are there any other choices out there?

Thanks

Adrian

I just replaced my chain and sprockets with a Regina kit I got from Hornig in Germany. Seems like good stuff ... pretty gold colour too. It was also just over half the price of anything I could buy in the colonies, even with freight.

There are also these on eBay;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-F800GS-F8...mQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item2a05d7cf0e

I haven't fitted any, so can't comment on quality. Just thought you might like a 4th option.

Just had a look at the supersprox sockets (as in the ebay link above) and am intrigued but not sure how robust they are - does anyone have any experience of them?

Default setting is : 116 links, 16 teeth front/42 teeth rear.

I just replaced mine, with a DID 525 Heavy Duty Gold X-ring chain and a touratech front *S*, 16 teeth (01-048-0483-0), but Touratech has 2 different rear sprockets for the F800GS. For a 08/09 model and 2010. I have a 08/09 model and I made the mistake, thinking they are all the same to order a 2010, but the holes (for the bolts) are 10mm instead of the 8mm on my standard sprocket. Mainly stupidity on my side for not checking. This means the rear sprocket now has some play around the bolts which I am not happy about and will replace the sprocket asap.

I have just spoken to BMW yesterday and they are not sure why Touratech makes a sprocket with 10mm holes as they reckon all their sprockets have 8mm holes, so I either order another TT, Motorworks or get a BMW one. I can't really find any other 42 teeth sprockets out there except for JT Sprockets, but they are a little difficult to get hold off.

OK next dumb question - what is the difference between the normal TT one and the "S" version and would that last through africa (top to bottom)?

Apparently only the weight as the *S* has drill through holes. I am sure it will last, can't see why not, but this coming saturday I am replacing my front and rear sprockets again for BMW ones.

Not sure why, but on the inside of my chain, I have noticed some "scraping" marks. I have also noticed that the chain is not running 100% on the chain rail, so just to be safe (and warranty purposes) I will be replacing both sprockets through a BMW dealership.

So, Sunday I will have slightly used TT rear and front sprockets for sale

When are you doing Africa ? We plan to leave around Sept this year !

P.S. The 08/09 and 2010 sprockets are definitely different and confirmed. 08/09 sprockets have 8mm holes and 2010 sprockets have 10mm holes.

Ok thanks - think I will go for the BMW ones as well - well the Motorworks items anyway which I think are BMW parts :)

We have a month to go till we are off - if we can get our cars sold that is :D

Motorworks also thinks that the sprocket is the same across all bikes, so just make sure it is the right sprocket for your bike.

Good luck with the trip, only a month, sounds exciting !
