Sqeaky Brakes...

Ok, I'll post this in the 1200 section since my bike is a 1200 (06 plate, 10k miles, ABS), but it's more of a general technical query. My front brakes are very squeaky when used lightly or at low speed - e.g. when filtering or just scrubbing off a bit of speed, but they're fine when 'hitting the anchors'... Brakes pull straight and true, without any 'grabby-ness'. They sound like 'metal on metal' as if the pads are worn out but there's plenty of meat left on the pads... what could it be? (No 'it's a 1200' comments please )
any thoughts?

Mine does the same, sounds like I’m riding my granddaughter’s bicycle.
They work fine and have plenty of weft on em, I use brake cleaner when I wash her n its quiet for a coupe of weeks. I sorta got used to it now.

There was a recall done on the earlier bikes, I certainly had an "anti-squeak" pack fitted to my 04 model, which was a modification to the disc mounting bolts/washers. I'd have thought this would have been sorted on the 06 model. It was only fitted however if the rider complained.

As a starter for ten though, have you had the pads off and put a bit of copper grease on the back of the pads?

Never had the pads off... (don't know how to do brakes as I've always traded bikes in long before I've worn pads out )... I'll try and get some help to look at this over the weekend and give it a go with the copper grease.

There's a warranty fix for this. Take it back to the stealer and ask him to sort it.

It's an easy job, as i live on the IOW, it wasn't worth taking it across to the mainland, so i ordered the 'rubberised washer' kit and did it myself, here are the part numbers for the new washers-34 11 7 682 434 (13.7mm) and 34 11 7 697 387 (8.5mm)

As gavin says it's an easy job. Just order the washers, take the wheel off, and undo the discs, fit the washers and do the discs up. Job done

One set fits between wheel and the disc the other between disc and bolt, makes the disc float a little more

Squeaky brakes

I was one of the first (here anyway) to suffer this problem (2004) and after the dealer had changed pads twice and discs once 'they' brought out this kit of washers which really was an instant cure. Quoting Haynes manual Chapter 5 Section 4.....according to the gospel of Philip Mather.....from 2006 rubberized washers were fitted on each side of the disc to minimize brake squeal. If required these can be fitted to earlier machines It goes on to advise tightening evenly a little at a time to initial torque setting 12Nm and then to final setting 24Nm. It is rated a'3 spanner job' - (which means, in case you don't know 'fairly difficult, suitable for competent DIY mechanic.) I would suggetst that a Haynes manual from Nippy Norman is a good investment at £15 post free.
