Squared off rear tyre

I know someone who changed a front tyre on his GSA at 4000 as it had squared off. There was a lot of tread left but he insisted the handling was effected. Not having experienced the same thing, I was left wondering just how bad the handling had deteriorated and would it have been safe to continue to use the tyre and get some more money's worth from it.

I suppose in short I'm asking if tyres MUST be replaced as they become unevenly worn or can they be used until insufficient tread remains

Any views anyone?

I always replace my tyres in pairs and although the rear is starting to square off the front one looks fine, having said that , i've noticed that the bike has started tipping into corners very eagerly at low speeds, so much so that i,ve really got watch it on mini roundabouts and when parking or the bars dive round.

I think this is because of tyre wear as i've checked the suspension and steering components and everything is good. I guess i'll find out when i get new tyres. BTW the bike handles great once i get going. :thumb2

Welsh roads and tracks, ‘without a pillion’ - guaranteed to round off your tyres. :thumby:

I thought most new tyres were "dual compound" now, so they have hard, long-wearing rubber in the centre of the tread, and soft, sticky, fast-wearing rubber on the leant-over contact patch?
Annakee 3's are single compound i think?
My K1200RS wears it's tyres rounded, not square

You would think that wouldn't you?
I've yet to have a "Dual Compound" Tyre wear as I'd expected it to (Rounded).
My K1600GTL Squared Off a Rear PR4 in around 3k miles and my Versys 1000 did the same to both ends on Pirelli Angel GT's in 5.5k miles.

Hiedenau K60 scouts or Continental TKC 70s.

Metzler Tourance and next square off very quickly.

A wee run up n down the west coast of Scotland would round things off nicely:D. Killed off three tyres like this one after holidays up there.

Still an inch (1") of unused rubber there LDT

You've paid for the rubber ... use it :D

I'm on a very square Anakee 3 at the moment - handling really affected by it - but predictable enough not to rush out and buy another tyre so close to the slightly warmer weather.

I have been thinking about the K60 scouts mainly because a do a lot of miles - any recommendations on what size to fit? I have looked throughout the forum and there is talk of getting slightly smaller 140 instead of 150 width

I ride a big heavy GSA and am very heavy myself - most of the commute is filtering in motorway traffic

cheers

Have a look at Conti Trailattack 3s. I’ve had two pairs of TA2s and after a heavy week through the Dolomites (260,000 vertical feet in 6 days) plus motorway mileage since they still look absolutely fine. The grip is also ridiculously good

Just returned from my MOT. I thought the back was close to needing replacement and is a little squared off though I don't notice it while riding. I got an advisory for the front being close to the limit in a few places, mainly near the edges. When I got home I found the invoice, Michelin Road 5 fitted in July 2018. They have managed 13,027 miles so far, initially weekend fun and commuting to and through London, now mainly A road and motorway commuting 100 miles a day. Will be fitting another pair very soon!

I'm still trying to find some reliable Feedback on the Anlas Capra R but they don't seem to be a very widely used Tyre as yet.....

... I'm not hard on tyres but i don't hang about either and most of the miles i do are on B roads so i'm a bit disappointed this has happened.
Even on B roads, you will spend most of the time going straight mind. :D

Anarkee 3's, standard tourance do square off but very stable wet or dry got a set of trail riders on now 200 miles so far so good.
