So, thinking of adding a SSD to my macbook pro as an additional drive (probably replacing the optical drive). Anyone got any recommendations of where to buy from and/or which manufacturers are best?

I am using an SSD in an oldish macbook pro and would not go back to a conventional HDD. Very fast boot up and instant on programs are the main benefit. To get the maximum benefit you will need to replace the existing HDD, i.e. the drive with the OS and programs on it, rather than fit the SSD as an additional drive. If you need data storage capacity, then use the HDD as the additional drive.
As to where to buy from, pick a online retailer with high turnover as prices are dropping daily. DABS or Ebuyer are both OK. Look at storage capacity v. access times v. price and work out the best bargain. Also remember to enable TRIM once the drive is fitted.

Thanks, yes thats exactly what I intend to do with the SDD i.e. to use the existing HDD as data storage. I swap the optical drive and make it a free standing device linking back via USB for the odd time that I need it.

I've got two crucial 256 gb SSD's ,, Try overclockers.co.uk
I'm using a Crucial drive I bought from Novatech, seems to be ok, but I do know they have a finite lifetime.
I did once work on a server which used a RAID array of SSDs, two quad core processors, bit of overkill for ten users, but I was very quick, even Exchange didn't manage to make it slow that much.

Yep your right but it's a lot shorter life with an ssd. They have a maximum number of writes to any one bit of data same as your flash drives have but it's handled in a far better way. Do not use defrag on an ssd, it will die a premature death. Other than making sure you have good backup plans which you should anyway go for it they are fast. Oh and don't buy cheap or it won't be fast, buy a known brand from a known source. The cheap ones can be knock offs or just a bunch of flash memory put together that don't perform well at all.
