As a part of my jaunt to the German Eifel region, I’ll be staying in Winterspelt, which is just over the border from St Vith.

These documentaries on the battles in and around St Vith, might interest some here.

We’re going to Monschau for 3 days before going on to Chimay so it might make an interesting place for lunch and a beer. I’ll put it in the memory bank for reference when we’re bored and trying to decide where to go.

If you’ve never been there I’d recommend Monschau for lunch one day, plenty of nice little restaurants (and a brewery restaurant that serves excellent apple strudel with ice cream) to occupy an hour or so.

I know Monschau and had pencilled it in for a lunch stop, roughly halfway around ‘day out five’.

. It seems that it was a close-run campaign.

Once they had got over the shock of the massive invasion front and its violence, it really was ever going to go the Allies’ way. Zero air support, once the skies cleared, lack of fuel (the Germans had anticipated stealing Allied fuel dumps on the march), disastrous congestion when they fell behind their over ambitious timetable and, not least, dwindling supplies of ammunition, ultimately lead to its total failure. Likewise, the parallel but smaller assault in the Colmar region.

Nice place Monschau we've been there a few times on the way to the ring; we've also taken in Malmady; and Stavelot when we've been cruising around in that kind of area; it all seems a long time ago these days;; i really am starting to vegetate in my old age;

We’ve used it when we’ve been going to Spa for the middle weekend of a 2 week break and always enjoyed it.

Monschau is a lovely place, nice restaurants with outside tables by the river. No vehicles into the centre of town so you have to park up and walk in though. where you sit for the meal is where the Christmas market is held, also worth going to and if you like mustard, there is a nearby (1 mile out out of town) monastery where they make/sell different varieties..... (also had a whiskey shop with decent prices, buy do not know if that is still there)

Rode through Winterspelt, then dropped onto the L1 to Vianden yesterday, having been at the La Gleize Tiger and museum. It's a big loop of Northern Luxembourg today and the trudge back to Calais tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your trip. .
