Hi

I have just picked up a cheap 1994 ST1100 which has a fault. Acording to the last Honda dealer to do the fault finding, it needs a new generator ie Alternator.

The battery holds it's charge fine and starts first time. But if you run the bike with lights on it discharges the battery as it is not being charged.

It is quite a big job to get at the alternator, but as they are the best part of £300+ for a new one, i wondered if they can be refurbished?

Has anyone had a alternator refurbished and if so where did you get it done?

Thanks very much

It's not too bad a job once you have bodywork off. Check with one of the companies that sell ex-plod bikes - or steptoe - they can get used or replacement parts cheap so it seems. Alos worth chacking the ABS parts that ususally go, while youre in there.

St1100 alternator

The alternators fail on these bikes because the rear wheel flings salt etc round them. When removed, ( Directly driven from read of crankcase),
one usually finds the case burst open due to the said corrosion.
Replacements are like hens teeth because of the said problem.

I have a friend, a very tight git, who, spent 3 months trying everything, before he eventually bit the bullet & bought one new. (4 months ago)
