Folks,

for a while I have been trying to find stainless brake nuts for the front calipers on my airheads - but no luck.

The best I can come up with is plated steel or brass.

We can get stainless bleed nipples (which I have fitted) - so why not the pipe nuts ?

I know there are corrosion cell issues with stainless and alloy - but that would affect the bleed nipples as well. PTFE tape can be used to prevent the nuts from siezing in the calipers if required.

Anyone got any ideas or sources of corrosion resistant pipe nuts . . all my brake pipes and nuts were replaced two years ago and the nuts are now rusted (Scottish roads are covered in salt for about five months of the year) ?

Thanks.

Bob.

S/S nuts

what do you mean exactly when you say "nuts" ??.
I presume you mean the "things" that tighten into the calliper actually on the brake pipe ????

That's it - described as "Brake Nuts - Male" in the catalogues.

The Airheads (mine, anyway) use 10mm x 1mm Short, Threaded To End (TTE), with a 3/16" hole.

I have plenty of shiny steel ones; but they don't stay shiny for long.

Stagonset will do them, but they are A2 stainless so i'm not sure if they will be suitable, no doubt someone will tell me !!

You can find them here :-

S/s

Ive done my own GS100 with everything in s/s, altho i got round your dilema by using full braided hoses. However, I found the best prices, best help, and best range for nuts/bolts etc was at HT engineering in Surrey.
Some local nut/bolt stockists can be helpful too, especially as they dont always want to put smaller amounts of items thru the books/tills.They also supply the bolts/screws with letters/numbers still on the heads of the bolts.Personally, I hate using polished headed bolts etc on my bikes, they look crap, AND you get charged silly prices. IMHO !!
Rant over !

Ps . .If you want a hand sourcing things, let me know, maybe I can help.I went thru my own boxer with a fine tooth comb re s/s stuff.

Are you talking about Banjo Bolts ??

These go through the hole in the BANJO FITTING at the end of a brake line.

They are available in Stainless Steel from any brake line supplier or good bike accessory outlet.

Also from the likes of Demon Tweeks.

Brake nuts, pipe nuts, T-nuts several names but I'm surprised at you Tarka:blast

:D You`d be surprised how many people refer to flexible brake lines/hoses as 'pipes' and I haven`t got automotive style pipes on any of my bikes... nor have I seen them on any g/s or GS...I suppose the question related to a Neolithic Airhead roadbike ? :augie:augie

s/s pipes etc

Yes, agree with above, S/s banjo's are readily available.

ps Tarka, ive been in the engineering "industry" for 30 years and weve always called brake lines etc "PIPES".Thats what they do, pipe things !

Neolithic? Pah! none of that modern rubbish. Paleolithic* before the quality standards went downhill.....:o

(* The Neolithic followed the Paleolithic Period, or age of chipped-stone..)

Thanks,

They don't show them on their web site but I have e-mailed them just in case.

Bob.

As I thought - Stagonset don't do them.

They pointed me to Vehicle Wiring Products - which is where I started (they don't do them and don't know anyone who does).

The search continues.

Thanks for your input.

I have made up 3/16" brake pipes out of Kunifer cupro-nickel tubing for both my Airheads - a 1988 R80RT and a 1989 R100GS.

The Kunifer tubing doesn't corrode - its the brake nuts that let the side down.

There's a guy "rbarton" on:

http://forums.lr4x4.com/

Who supplies them or at least used to.

This was a recent post on there by a regular (Les Henson):

You would be wise to replace all your brake pipes at the same time with copper. Stainless fittings (Mr Barton), and stainless braided hoses. You can forget the major part of the braking system for years to come.

You will need to know what sizes you want as he won't know what'll be on your bike. Worth a try. Good bunch on that forum too :thumb2

Thanks for that.

As it happens . . I'll be needing bits for my 1974 LR Series-3 :blast

Just too many toys I guess.

Success :thumb

One of the 4X4 boys came up trumps.

If anyone is interested - Stainless Brake Nuts / Tube Nuts for Airhead Beemers can be obtained from:

Think Automotive Ltd.,

The nuts arrived this morning and look OK, though I haven't tried them in Brembo calipers yet.

Size is: 10mm dia x 1mm pitch, Threaded to End, Short, for 3/16" pipe.

Cost £3.95 each plus carriage and VAT (so not cheap).

Usual disclaimers, I have no connection with them apart from as a first time customer.
