Stainless steel timing cover bolts

Whatever you do, don't just swap the bolts! Put some Duralac or similar on them. Otherwise... in 9 months they'll have united with the alloy casing.....

Any issue with removing the originals bolts, giving the heads a good clean up and putting them back in???

I like some of Shaw's stuff, but jesus thats a lot of money for a handful of stainless bolts. They're M6x40 and plenty on ebay for pennies.

Cant see any issue with removing one bolt at a time to clean up and replace, just dont remove several at a time to keep the gasket well sealed.

I have replaced most of the bolts on my 1150 with S/S, a smear of copperslip and they'll be fine. :thumb

*EDIT* sorry thought this was in airheads section! the bolts are not M6x40, some are M6x30 and some M8x30.

Any risk of the bolts working loose due to the copper grease? I would have looked to use some locktite but of course the two won’t work well together!

Stainless will be fine with copperslip or Nickle anti seize paste, Do not use locktite.

If replacing do one bolt at a time.
 
I use Shaw Stainless...(mostly), or "Stigs" https://www.a2stainless.co.uk/

the ACF-50 grease has been good for stopping bi-metallic corrosion (for me at least!):

I use it on my Defender too, where stainless bolts are next to the aluminium...no corrosion yet after a few years :rob

The old bolts/screws will (I'm assuming because usually they are) zinc plated. This is why they eventually turn a dull grey.

So the risk of polishing is you'll remove the zinc plating. But even if you didn't, they're going to turn dull grey again...

Good point.

I was going to give them a lick of Hammerite silver as I’ve got some laying around. Although this may (will) get scratched off in the hex socket, the rest of the bolt will look a lot better.

It seems you need 2 m8 x30
12 m6 x30 and 4 m5x 20

But the associated non standard washers could be a problem .....
