Just got my first GS - an 1100 - and its completely standard other than engine bars. :thumb2

So, having had a look around and seen lots about fog lights, Tobinators, screens etc I wanted to know what essential additions I should make to start with??

Found buffetting to be bit of an issue on the ride back from picking it up as well as a bit of vibration through my feet.

All ideas / suggestions are welcome! :D

Don't do anything to it just ride it they're just fine as they are.

I spent a small fortune on my 1100 buying Touratech crap, Power chips and a whole range of exhausts after a few years the best set up was bog standard apart from a Remus exhaust with the remus collector box and a slightly taller screen.

Nice bikes. Enjoy :thumb2

Yep,just ride it for 6 months, then see what you really need, and I bet it won't be much.

Top bike and welcome:beerjug:

I've found petrol to be the best mod.

But that was after I'd stuck a pair of Vern's boxes on, a GPS, Ohlins front and rear, a Touratech front guard, Touratech gearbox reinforcers and bump stops, a Sargeant seat and a Remus.

:D

56k on the clock (so pretty much a new bike) and going like a train.

Welcome to 'Never Never Land' Dipperd :thumb

As said above, just ride and enjoy ... different people have different mods for different reasons so ride for six months and come up with your own for your own reasons. You have a great bike there and it will take you round the world just as it is :thumb

Oh ... by the way, congrats on coming straight in as a subscribed Tosser, you'll get your money back pretty dam soon on here :nod

:D

Thanks guys, looks like riding it is then!

Going to Germany in August so a bit of time for getting a feel for it. Just didnt know if there were any base mods that 'must' be done.

Going to get one of the bigger MRA screens anyhow ;)

Welcome to 1100 ownership, they are pretty good straight out of the box, I would recommend replacing the brake flexibles as a matter of course (theres a sticky on the subject at the top of this page) other stuff is pretty much down to personal choice or replacing stuff as it wears out, a decent service should take care of the vibes.

Done a fair bit to my bike over the years.. but one thing I haven't done is buy anything from touratech.

Some of the best 'mods' I have were bought from vendors on this forum... including the MRA screen (from Jaws) OR 2nd hand from Ebay.

Aside from that.. the two best mods have been.. having the seat completely rebuilt by Tony Archer. (built up by 4" - now a 38" seat height) Comfortable now to do a 900 mile day (last year) without any need for either a putnams or dead sheep. both of which I (rather foolishly) bought and now use purely for camping.. as a pillow and cover. (blissfully luxurious I might add)

And new suspension.. bought as part of a group buy organised by another forum member.

Everything else has been done in dribs and drabs.. individually quite cheap considering the vast improvements they've made.

Lights from 'How Much'
Led brake lights and rear outriggers from 'Techno'
Hard parts from another Vendor.. at a fraction the cost from TT. (and not that nasty yellow colour)
Pillion area luggage plate - Ebay
Steptoes headguards - from Ebay. (I loathe engine bars)
Risers/setbacks - Ebay
Lower/wider pegs - SWMotech
Migsel mount and 660 - Ebay
Braided lines - direct from Goodridge

And a custom paint job. done localy. The original tank shed its liner.

One thing I'll never do. is alter in any way the engine or exhaust.. both of which are (and will remain) completely standard. The exhaust is a replacement.. brand new (10 miles) and just £25 from Ebay (delivered)

Adding it all up... just a smidge over £1000. spread over 6 yrs.

I never really understood the attraction of the nonsense TT sell.

Luggage? Aluminium crates don't suit my needs. I have a pair of system panniers which are ideal for me. given the infrequency they're used. And a H&B Gobi topbox.. which lives on the bike semi-permanently.

You can do a lot with these bikes.. what is essential, you'll work that out for yourself as time goes by. Just as I have.

One of the more usefull ones is to fit the speedo drive from the 1100R so that at motorway speeds, the speedo + trip meter are almost exactly right.

I didn't see the point. the 'discrepancy' is.. as far as I'm concerned a useful safety net. when speed cams are about if you're riding dead on 30, 40 or whatever.. you're actually going a tad slower. that's good, in my book.

Agree with that, if going that far I will have the sat nav on anyway.

Much prefer to be just under than just over :)

I've had my 1100 for nearly a year now.

It came with a Remus pipe but was otherwise standard. So far I haven't added much. I got a set of TT racks secondhand off this site and the Zega's (also secondhand) off my previous bike (Africa Twin) fitted right on just by swapping sides. A pair of decent system panniers would have suited me fine had I not already had the Zega's.

Other than that I just bought some standard s/h bits from Motorworks to tidy it up cosmetically and get it running more smoothly (CO Potentiometer).

Overall I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. An MRA screen seems like a sensible mod, and recommended hereabouts. That'll probably be my next purchase but I'm in no hurry. :thumb

I`ve had mine a couple of years and done about 15K and I would say the best mod is the MRA screen.
I have quite recently fitted RT alloys. I wasn`t sure about them to start with but now I just love them.
This very evening I have fitted a GSA tank bought fro another member. Expensive, yes, but the way I look at it I am just `borrowing` it as I will get my money back when I sell the bike with the standard tank.
I have also fitted a peg lowering kit which is very comfy but as the alloys lower the bike already it cuts ground clearance a bit too much so I may remove them (or buy boots more often!).

I'd take it for a couple of long rides in the kit you go touring in and see how the seat performs. When I went to Germany I found I had a 200 mile tank range but only a 100 mile range on my backside. Bootleg Bike seats in Preston recovered the seat and fitted a gel pack.
