Standing up v Sitting down on dirt.

Patsy Quick sums it up nicely;

Stand up when you have to.
Sit down when you need to.

If you are riding all day, standing up is going to be hard work.

Likewise, traversing tricky stuff is almost certainly better standing up, since you have much more control and can use your legs to manage the shocks, which despite er-minio’s statement, is exactly the right thing to do. Try riding over washboard or rocky trails sat down and you’ll be bounced off the bike.

Having said that, there was a massive fat Welsh lad who won many enduros and rallies and he never stood up at all. Forget his name but he was fast!
Patsy used to tell me off for sitting down nearly all the time…still, I beat her on more than one ralleye raid stage. 😎

When the mighty 690 was running right that is.

Tbh, I wasn’t chatting about big bikes cause I don’t think they’re even suitable for off-road mainly because of the weight (stay tuned for my next thread “less is more off-road!!” 😜
I was more referring to more suitable midsized bikes like the Tenere 700 or Tuareg 660 with the big front wheels.
Not suitable?
Strata Florida.
Claerwen Reservoir.
Local lanes.

Yeah, but can you just imagine how much more fun you’d have on a more suitable bike? Like a KTM 350EXC for example 🤔
Define “more suitable”. For what? Green lanes, technical? Enduro? Full /multiple days out/away?
I have as much fun on either.
500EXC-F or R1250GS.
There’s stuff that suits either or both.
But then there’s also fuel range, comfort, amount of road sections and more to consider.

Yeah okay, I get your point. I’ve only taken my GSA on gravel trails - mostly on continent. I think it would be too much of a handful on the technical stuff though.
You do look like you’re enjoying yourself though - so all good 👍

Stand or Sit ??
I do a bit of both and usually stand on downhill sections as it easier to transfer weight, fore & aft or side to side
Uphill - I usually sit, as it’s easier to load the back wheel for traction, by transferring weight to the rear mudguard area
However I do come from a Trials riding background, from the age of 12 where standing up, is the normal mode …although Trial and Trail bikes are totally different

Anyhow I think it’s best to follow the TRF example and stand up always, off-road

I always thought part of the standing up bit was to push your CoG down to the lowest part of the bike (the pegs) to help with stability?

I also have a beautiful clip of one of the guys doing a somersault into water (1250GS) while we were trying to cross a flooded section. It was epic :D
(btw standing up for 98.5% of the route :) )

Some people must have too much money??!! Lol
At least the wanker from Tasmania gets paid for throwing his Harley over rocks!!
The GS is totally unsuitable for this terrain………in my opinion 😬

……….and if being honest with yourself, you probably thing so too?!
That’s why you bought a KTM 500EXCF 🤔

Buy a trials bike........reduces your options :D

Wrong. I have the 500 because the GS won’t physically fit into some lanes despite it being perfectly capable of going through them technically.
Years of use from predominantly illegal MX/enduro bikes has made them footpeg deep in many places meaning a pair of horizontal 625cc singles beach.
