Standing up v Sitting down on dirt.

Wrong. I have the 500 because the GS won’t physically fit into some lanes despite it being perfectly capable of going through them technically.
Years of use from predominantly illegal MX/enduro bikes has made them footpeg deep in many places meaning a pair of horizontal 625cc singles beach.
I’m not sure the relevance of the mx or enduro bikes being illegal, legal ones do the same damage.
In any case, you win this particular discussion 👍
Enjoy humphing your 250kg (plus fluids) twinkle toes up rocky hills! Probably even more fun coming down them?! 🤣

Some people must have too much money??!! Lol
At least the wanker from Tasmania gets paid for throwing his Harley over rocks!!
The GS is totally unsuitable for this terrain………in my opinion 😬

None of us have too much money. We just like bikes and riding.

Yes, riding a big bike on complex (for our ability) terrain is silly, but that is part of the fun.

One exact minute out of that weekend, I posted this before at the time:

I’m fairly inexperienced offroad, but apart from the water bit in the Strata Florida and another slight climb with rocks, most of it was doable, and with the weather we were blessed with - stunning.

Okay, a picture (or more so a video) is worth a thousand words!
Guess it looks fun, but can you imagine what it’d be like on a 150kg bike?! lol
It reminds me of the old “Twin Shock” association. They felt comfortable on the old bikes cause they could hide their limited abilities behind them. Saying it was the bikes that limited their speed. They wouldn’t be able to say that on a 450 crosser for example 🤔
Anyway, each to their own 👍👍

I have a DRZ too. I do both.

I rode from London to Wales, and then back after all that.
Would have proved slightly more challenging on the DRZ… :)

Yeah, I get that argument. When I rode a lot of road - I just trailered my dirt bike. Surely, there must be something that does both?! Like a KTM 690 Enduro or similar 🤔

I’m still waiting for the laying down option as that was me on the Col de Sommelier a week ago. My Rally Pro is much lighter than a GS but still fucking heavy to pick up on one’s own. I did get to within 1 kilometre of the top but it just got too steep and gnarley for me. I dropped it on the way down, my fault completely. I grabbed a load of front brake and front just washed out on a hairpin. Amateur, school boy error. Bit of broken plastic and bruised pride. We’ll both recover.

Masochists!!
Guess it’s better than paying someone to walk on you with stilettos?! :arselick:

A bit late to this, but:

As others said, on the BMW ORS course in wales, instructors taught us to stand straight off the bat, and would pretty much stand themselves soon as the road got even a little rough.
But when I did a days off-road riding in Madereia with a guide (Was amazing 100% reccomend) we came to this quite technical section, and the guy was surprised I was standing, saying it would be easier if I sat... I kept falling off either way, not helped by the boots being three sizes too small and where agony..

Anyways, my take on it is standing gives me more control, but is also harder... I fall off eitherway and I'm rubbish so hey ho

Was out with WIM Motors Academy in Portugal the other week. When they are teaching a newbie all the training is sitting down.

IME there is a time to stand and a time to sit............... and a bit in between when you are just trying to hang on :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The only time I stand on the pegs is to fart. We've all done it.
(Socially unacceptable when carrying a pillion).

Well it’s been a while since your last fart.

So from memory .

Sit on the flat stuff - ish , stand for the boulders , find somewhere in between for the rough stuff.

Worked for me.

But don’t ride a lump of an XR 650 R ( I recall ) ?

No electric start .

Kicking it in full winter kit damn near killed me.

They don’t like starting after falling over . :blast

I am genuinely interested in constructive responses - not just the usual “ I’ve always done it that way” bullshit 🤔
Pretty Much what you are "comfortable with" really

Standing does give you the clearer view (possibly) of the route ahead and allow more time to avoid potholes or sticky out bits

I always felt more in control when on the pegs on gravel or loose stuff plus I also have a tall screen fitted that distorts out by the edges SO I definitely get a clearer view of what I am trying not to hit ! :D

This is how you do it! ;) But I doubt we'll do it again :ROFLMAO::aidan
