Hi all,
Does all the oil return to the sump after the engine has stopped. The reason I ask is that I saw that the oil level was low so i got the bike upto normal operating temp, on centre stand, topped upto just below the top of the red circle ( about 2mm ).
The next time I checked the oil was after I had ridden the bike some 60 miles, I saw that the oil level was over the line and this was when the bike is stone cold. When I topped it up I used Act>evo 4T it was about 5mm above the lower red part of the circle, I put in about 350mls that took it just below the upper level. The bike had done 900 miles since the first service so I thought that it had burn the oil. Any ideas ?

Whenever I top up a boxer engine I use the same method to determine the level, eg ridden and up to temp, on centre stand for 5 mins and check. Then work out how much you want to put in eg 1/2 litre. Put only 1/2 litre in and check when the standard conditions are met. Topping up till it shows in the sight glass is one good way to fcuk the engine ;)

Others will mention side stand / 10 minutes / sacrificing a bat / etc / etc when checking the oil level. The only thing of real importance is consitency in how you do it, and that the engine / gearbox is at normal operating temp.

Hi john,
I followed what it said in the book, I stopped below the top level mark just in case a small amount of oil didnt make it to the sump via the rocker cover, Ill check the book again just in case I misunderstood what I read.

Grimo.

No,
I followed the book, it didn't mention running the engine. Do I need to do this ? and yes I stopped when i saw the oil reach the desired mark or close to it.

See what I said, work how much you need to put in, put it in and do not top up again till the bikes been out on a run. Topping up without running can cause double the oil to be put in and that ****s the engine ;)

Oil

Get the engine upto normal operating temp, turn off, leave bike on side stand for 3-5 mins, place on centre stand, after couple of mins check oil level.
Trust me only accurate way. Advise from top mechanic!!

IME that is very good advice for 1150s, but not needed on my 1200.

how i do mine: when warm (that's after a ride) place on mainstand. leave for a few minutes. check. never had much variation of levels doing it like that.

i sometimes use the level when cold as an indication that i should check later when it warms up.

Agree- That's by far the most sensible way to do it
