Hi,

After having the battery off for the addition on my GPS I was wondering if there is a start up procedure.

Some BMW's you have to open the throttle full 3 times before starting with the ignition on. Anything like this on the G650gs.

Out of interest to others I found the battery vent pipe trapped and completely flattened. It years since I had to add distilled water to a battery.

Whats the views on the preferred battery alternative.

Thanks all.

Steve

Motobatt are good or a little more expensive, Odessey.

Yes ignition on, open close throttle fully twice ignition off.
Ignition on, wait for lights to go go and start without touching throttle.

You can also then let it idle without touching the throttle until the fan kicks in.

Hi Timolgra,

I did actually start the bike, do you suggest I carry out the procedure you recommend or should I disconnect the battery and do it all again.

Either really depends if you touched the throttle when starting it, instead of disconnecting the battery it's easier to unplug the ECU. (for 20 mins)
I've had a few 650's that run better ie, no flipping stalling! after using that procedure.

Hi Timolgra,

Unplugging the ECU is a darn sight easier then getting to the battery again. So tomorrow I will give it a go. Cannot be for certain if I did touch the throttle at start up so I will carry out the procedure just in case.

Last few days have proved pretty useful in getting to know the bike, had to remove a few panels to get my cabling routed neatly. This with a few other jobs gives the owner a bit confidence. Getting to those spark plugs looks fun but there's 10,000 miles before that job.

Spark plugs aren't too bad!
Valve clearances I think are a bit more challenging!

Thanks all that have contributed, just to back up what Timoglra posted. The start procedure he suggested is correct it allows the ecu to see the throttle cable in its minimum and maximum positions which it forgot as the battery had been disconnected. Plus a couple of other bits of info which allows it to reset itself and also it relearn other settings as you ride.

This info was stumbled across when I was seeking out alternative batteries on other forums.

Steve.
