Over the last few months my 1100 occasionally does nothing at all when the starter button is pressed but a bit of a wiggle of the button and it starts normally. So I guess the button is on its way out.

Is it possible to change just the starter switch without having to replace the whole switch cluster? And in the short term, can I hotwire it from under the starter motor cover if I get stranded?

Cheers
Matt

If it is the switch contacts itself (sounds like it is) then you probably need to replace the switch.

You should always be able to hotwire it by jumping main positive to terminal 50 (little tab connection at the solenoid)

get some switch lubricant/contact cleaner from Maplin, take the switch cluster off (one screw) spray cleaner copiously around and reassemble, the switchs are very simple and durable, so this should fix it, if the contacts are really corroded, then get yer nailboard out and start burnishing :D

Thanks guys - I'll take the switch cluster to bits and have a look ( and experiment with hot wiring...)
