Hi Folks, has anyone retro fitted the silver plastic starter motor cover that was on the 04-07 12GS,s onto the new model which has no cover , the newer bike looks unfinished IMHO because of this! Or does anybody else make one? Touratec?

People have picked up on this since 2008, never bothered me though - I like the idea of the saving in weight on the later models, by not fitting a starter motor cover and it is easier to jump start the bike now, with no cover - BMW Assistance personnel requested this, so they saved time on each call out to a bike with a flat battery

I think it is possible to fit a cover from the earlier models, but this may invalidate your warranty because the cover will inhibit airflow to the starter motor and it may overheat

It may be possible to fit a cover from an earlier model but the cover will need some modification,I bought a cover from flea bay for my 09 bike, when I offered it up to the bike it looked like a fair bit of cutting and re-shaping would be required so the cover is now gathering dust somewhere in the garage
In the case of the 2 1200's I have owned the starter motor only turns for a second or two so cannot see it overheating

Aaaaahhhhhhhh !

The penny just dropped.

Mate who has an older GS1200A - says to me (who has a newer GS1200A)...you're lost the cover off yer starter motor mate. It must have dropped orf.
'Bugger' says I !

Explains it all.

Perhaps we should leave the tank trim off to make it easier to replace the FPC ?:blast

or maybe leave the back wheel off to facilitate replacement of final drive . :blast:blast

I know someone has said Ilmberger do a carbon fibre cover...but unfortunately they don't...

....when I looked into this some time ago I did manage to find someone who did make a 'replacement' cover....

...but I can't find it now! :blast

Would anyone know where I might find one?
:thumb2

I thought it looked wrong without the cover too - BUT there is a big advantage to not having it - I can now get my hand in to polish the top of the cat far more easily on the 2010 bike.

lets leave the belt cover off so we can keep it dry and Mr an Mrs BMW can save a shed load of dosh replacing corroded front engine covers. If the starter overheats that'll be a first. It is about saving money it always is BMW give naff all. Except their warranty maybe, but to keep all us lot lot happy they considering how many faults they tend to have. But I still have'nt found anything yet like it. Lastly those sodding journos have been moaning about our indicators since i had my first beemer in '89. the silly buggers at the factory have listened to them and have decided to put on MR Honsukawiyam system I don't like. so there sod'em all rant over.:D

I hate the idea of universal japanese bike style indicator switches too... BMW left and right paddles with independent cancel button are just fine :thumb2

I must be missing something , and if its bloody obvious dont take the p*ss but why do you need to get at the started motor to start the bike if you have a flat battery.

Any one out there know of anyone that produces a cover?

Google is leading me no-where...

...I may go down the pre-08 cover and go at it with a hacksaw and file...

...but would prefer a manufactured item.
