Has anybody been able to fit the silver plastic starter motor cover from an earlier model to the o8 GS1200 that for some reason BMW forgot to fit! looks a mess to me with all that exposed wiring hanging out there in the water, mud and other road crap! ta all,

Missing Cover

I have a theory.

I was wondering why would BMW discontinue a cover which in everyones opinion made that area of the bike look better???????.

My Theory is that without it, the gearbox runs cooler making the seals cooler and possibly stopping them leaking.

Just a theory though.

I think too many starter motors rusted away after a couple of months. So this way people can see it and keep it clean.

Only a theory

My theory is that it allows easier attachment of the Jump Leads, for owners who can't work out how to get their seat off.

Shift as many units out of the factory as possible & keep cutting costs.

Truth!

I think they've left the cover off to keep the starter motor cooler, which in turn keeps the gearbox cooler and hence the engine. The rear subframe is therefore cooler, as is the seat. This keeps your tackle cooler making you are more fertile increasing the possibility of your reproducing and producing another future buyer of the GS.

Just a theory though.

It,s because of all the councils recycling now, Bmuu use to go round the local tips and gather up all the empty milk containers, then whittle them into quality parts like starter motor covers/pistons and valves :thumb:thumb

Just a theory mind :augie

Nah- the bike is cooler looking with the cover on- It's all to do with cost -££, smaller beak -££, no bar across handle bars ££=no need for soft cover-££, crap fuel cap -££..........etc.
