When starting from cold, my 1150 ADV starter motor makes a funny screeching noise after I let go of the start button for about half a second or so. When the engine is hot or still warm from a recent run it doesn't do it. Any clues from you technical types out there?

sounds like it could be bearing noise as it is running down offloaded, starters usually have phos bronze oilite bushes, try a tad of fresh oil

could be your starter ring gear -

you don't want it to be

Before you go mad & pay big bucks, remove the starter motor & grease the shaft & gear. it is not uncommon for them to get dry & become sticky which by what yours sounds like

This site's great :)

I thought i would do a search on here as my 1100 is doing the same as blue sweepers.

Now to find out how to grease the starter shaft and gear...

Cheers everyone :beerjug:

Yup, the 1100 and 1150 starter motors are the same.

Cheers,

Practice a few push-starts!

Greg

OOooo you don't wanna even go there sister!!!!

It took 8 people 20 mins to bump start mine inthe car park of the plough last year.......

Mind you, it was worth the effort watching Nobby trying to touch the ground while giving it a go :D

Push-start!

Tried push-starting mine on my lonesome a few months ago - no chance. Good chance of dropping the GS or busting a gut though. Fanum is right, don't go there. :o

Joe,

Your gear on the starter motor may have sheared off, mine did on my R1100GS taking with it a tooth off the flywheel ringear. I thought I would be in for a very expensive repair, but bought a second hand ringear from Motorworks for £25 and got Andy Metcalfe Motorcycles near Guisborough to fit it. He charged me £200 for labour which I thought was very very reasonable seeing as it's a complete rear end strip down to get the gear box off.

Anyaway remove your starter motor and inspect the gear and also look for any teeth that may have come off your ring gear at the same time. If your're lucky then you might just need to buy a new starter motor.

If this is the case, then buy it from Jon Rayski who sells them on e-bay from Euro Electrics. Just do a search for "Valeo Starter" on e-bay and you'll find him. I can really reccomend this guy he's really friendly and provides an excellent service. You can get a brand new one sent over from America cheaper than buying a reconditioned one over here., and it will only take about three days to get here. Make sure you ask him to fill out the customs form as "used Auto Part Value: $40" this way you wont get charged import duty and VAT.
Hope this helps. :thumb

Nice one Michel,
Does anybody know if this starter motor is the same set up for the R1100gs, my starter is turning but sometimes it does not engage with the engine.
thanks
