starter motor on 06 GSA not turning

hello
bike wont start
battery fine (I think) and dash lights up but has the engine icon with "!" displayed
when I press starter there is a loud click from the solenoid but nothing else
I've had a quick look but unable to see how to get to starter motor or solenoid to check connections
if someone could describe the path would be most appreciated

Battery have you checked the voltage with a meter?, should be about 13 volts with ignition turned off. connect meter to battery and push the starter if you see the voltage reading drop down a lot you'll have a dud battery ,these things do give up
without notice so try this first. Do a search on here re starting lots of advice but try the above test first.

As above, give the battery a full charge,more likely to be knackered as they just dont seem last.Odesseyes do a good replacement.

RAC man out (<30mins!) and yup, knackered battery
things was I turned it over couple days ago and it was all fine,
battery is a bosch battery I bought in Halfords for £60 about a year ago
it had a 6month warranty...

The batteries Halfords sell may not be up to the job. I bought one from them for my old F800 and was somewhat concerned to see that the rated Cold Cranking current was only about half that of the OE battery (even though the charge capacity in Amp-Hours was the same).

I have a mate who bought a 1050 Speed Triple which was very slow to start. I told him it was the starter sprag but he insisted it was the battery. The speedy was fitted with a Motobatt which I removed whilst he shot off to Halfords to buy a new Bosch battery.

With the Bosch fitted the speedy still struggled to turn over so I told him again "it's your starter sprag that's pooped not your battery" He wouldn't have it so I left him to it taking the Motobatt with me

Two days later his starter sprag failed completely. Sprag replaced the Bosch battery failed seven months later and the good news is I gained a Motobatt which is still sat on my GSA 12 months later doing stirling work in firing the old girl up

Bosch car batteries used to have a two year warranty - maybe bike ones too?

the yusa on my old 1000cc Suzuki usually lasted 3 years before replacing
will source one of those next, see what happens

and yes, the battery had been on optimate trickle charger for over a year, since purchase
Mr RAC tried to sell me a CTEK charger he had in his van (apparently they sell quite a bit from their vans..) for £70
I declined

My original yuasa on my tl1000s lasted 9 years, the second one I bought in germany lasted 6 years, I bought its third last year at the BMF for £30.00 and its still going strong,
The odysee on my GSA has been on there since I bought it in 2008.
Btw, I have NEVER used a trickle charger,

Just buy the OEM battery, they should know which one is best for their bikes.

Really? The OEM battery is enough to avoid warranty claims but it isn't low cost or anything special.
A better spec is worth having especially on bikes used infrequently and equivalent specs can be had much cheaper than OEM.

Use jump leads to prove it is the battery. Don't run the donor engine it can over stress the generator.
