I have a couple of R90’s, anyone know of an alternative relay for the starter motor. The original metal clad item is very expensive, I’m wondering if a later relay would be suitable as they are a lot more reasonably priced.

A normal relay will work. You’ll need to solve the connection of cables that use the relay as a junction box; I’ve used a double-ended female spade link for this. Then you need to fasten the relay in place.
