Hi all , im pretty sure my starter motor is knackered, the battery really struggles to turn it over . I've taken it (9 tooth bosch unit ) off and I'm sure that the bendix cog thing should turn easier than it does. (i can turn it with my thumb with a fair bit off effort.)
im thinking off getting it rebuilt but I've come across Gary at B.A.M.W doing brand new units for around £100 delivered. has anyone had one ? any good ? or anyone got a spare starter motor in their shed to sell ?
its off an 88 mono rt though i think that most off the larger engine bikes all have the same starters ?

It should turn pretty easily in your hand.
Be careful if you're tempted to try the starter off the bike, it will try and leap out of your hands....... DAMHIK :blast

I've found with the Bosch starter motors just stripping them down and cleaning and lubricating makes the world of difference. Also you need to check the connections are clean and tight at both the battery and the motor ends.

Lastly check that it doesn't turn faster when you short the solenoid terminals with a screwdriver.

Repaired my RS starter a few years ago, just replaced the various plain bearings and did a general clean up and it's worked reasonably well since.

Their not great a starter to begin with, so any deterioration shows up quickly.

I bought one of the cheap Valeo knock offs when they first came out about four years/ 120,000 km back - they were $90- or GBP60- then.

Quality is as good or better than OEM, and it is still performing perfectly, starting my high comp 1000 cc G/S at the touch of the button, hot or cold.

Gary Burton's are Valeos which are fine 'til the magnets come unstuck, then you need to replace the body with one from Euro Motoelectics from Denver Co. which have spring clips between the magnets to prevent it. I've done this twice now for mine, so far so good and as previously mentioned very good for dealing with High Compression motors.

thanks for your replies, thats given me a bit of confidence in Garys unit, i wouldnt have thought he would sell rubbish looking at the bikes he sells. no joy with the repair/test so far the place i used to use has closed down :blast

I've got another local place to try tomorrow fingers crossed it will be a good cheap fix. :thumb

If you are getting the Bosch rebuilt, be sure to specify new bushes as wear here can cause slow operation of the starter motor.

I'm fairly sure that all modern Valeos have the magnet retaining clips fitted, not sure about the Chinese copies, though the copy in one of my bikes has worked ok for a number of years.

thanks thats great ive brought one from Gary so fingers crossed it will be here by saturday so i can get the bike back together.
just need to order some cables and other bits n bobs from motobins :bounce1:D
