I have had problems with my starter motor. Problems started last autumn.
Engine starts with the first try or not. If it doesn' start, you have to try maybe 20 times. It's only giving a strange noise. Starter motor turning but engine not turning.

I changed the solenoid. It is a Valeo D6RA solenoid available in car stores.
Citroen AX and many others use almost the same starter.
No help

I changed the carbon brushes, cheap for cars.
No help.

Those bikes have Valeo D6RA55 or D6RA75 starters. Mine has Valeo D6RA75, which doesn't loose it's magnets so easily.

Then I checked the planetary gears. All in good shape.
The outer plastic gear ring may broke.

Everything in good shape, so what is the problem..

I tested the starter motor disconnected to the engine, only electrics connected. All worked well. I even made some wood milling with the starter gear wheel and it had plenty of power for grinding.

So what the hell is the problem?

Maybe Bendix anyway. :eek
I then got an idea. I test the motor without spark plugs.
Less load for Bendix.
And heureka :clap

The engine was turning with no problems.

So what can I do? Bendix is slipping.
You can not buy a new Bendix for this starter. Car starter motors turn in CW direction and this goes to CCW. And they have 10 teeth, this has 9. Car Bendix costs 19.90 euros. And BMW stores don't sell any Bendix for this.

I then decided to clean the bendix device in our ultrasonic cleaner.
AND IT REALLY HELPED.

No starting problems after that.
I have a R1100GS, 134.000 km.

Our ultrasonic cleaner in our motorcycle club saved me over 200 euros for not buying a new starter motor.
