A pleasant observation -this new GS starts sooooo easily even when really cold, must be the centrifugal decompression gizmo - my twin cam sometimes struggled on cold mornings even with the clutch lever pulled in.... went chugga chigga chugga chugga before it fired up - the new one fires up effortlessly every time.

Nothing to do with having a brand new battery then.......:D

Nope not that, had brand new battery in the twin-cam but cold starting was never this easy - the new one has got a higher compression ratio too which should be harder to turn over and the battery is only 12AH - this new decompressor thing really does make it easy.

Yeah I know, was just pointing out how effective it is - a good move by BMW :)

The sarcastic tone was not addressed at you, Engineer . . .
Just me being a smart arse and, maybe, having a little dig at all those doubters we have to put up with

I didn't know it had that, a brilliant bit of design by BMW :thumby:

I understood what you were saying - the doubters need a little teasing at times, it's entertaining :d

I hate to say this on this forum but auto decompressors (not the old bike type where you have to pull a lever to lift a valve) has been around for quite a long time and recently Ducati have an effective system on their Panigale and have been able to reduce the alternator/battery weight as a result. The non-Panigale big V twins can be a pain to start in the cold sometimes (always?).
The differences between the designs of the decompressors shows how clever the engineers are and in fact, I've seen photos of the Ducati valve system and still can't see how it works but I wish I had that on my 999S.
Only a week or so now before my new GS arrives (hopefully) and no, I'm not going to take the cam cover off to see how BMW have done it! Tempting as it is!

It's a shame we couldn't have had a version of Fiat's Multi Air or twin air system. Exhaust is cam operated but inlet is hydraulic driven by the exhaust's cam. Electronic control bleeds off oil pressure to infinitely vary the inlet open and duration. No throttle body and built in easier on the starter.
