… for the first time since it was last ridden around mid 2021 and hadn’t been started in probably around 12-18 months.

I am going to replace the battery today, but was wondering what would the starting procedure be, besides the obvious of turning the key and pushing a button. Do I need to do anything specific before starting it?

Many thanks.

Personally I’d change the engine oil and filter before starting it. Unless the oil is new and unused it will contain contamination that you don’t want sloshing around the engine. How old is the fuel? 3 year old fuel will be contaminated too.

I can understand that the fuel may have degraded but What will the oil be contaminated with?

Bike has done hardly any miles 300-400 miles since last serviced in late October 2020.

EDIT: Since last MOT and a service, the bike has actually has only done 187 miles.

The oil showing in the sight glass is clear with a hint of brown (mix of residual old oil and new)

Fuel, there is hardly anything left in the fuel tank, hang just lifted it off so fresh fuel will go in regardless.

Bike was being started and run for 15-20 minutes at the time, once every 4-6 weeks, before the battery could no longer keep the charge, rendering dead. Last start up would’ve been at least a year ago.

Check air inlet for spider webs and rodent or avian nests. Fit new battery, 5 litres of new fuel. Press starter button.

Just had the air filter out. It is an original unit from 2016. Looks dirty, but I’ve seen much filthier units removed from cars.

Output (motor side) shaft side rubber gator need replacing.

I am happy to attempt the job myself, but afraid I might not have the time on my hands

Any advice on how best to drain old fuel?

I’ve tipped fuel tank upside down and emptied as much of the fuel as I can via the filler cap. I can see that I can unscrew the fuel pump assembly, but worried that the seal might need replacing and I haven’t got the spare parts on hand.

There is probably around 2-3L of old fuel in there. Do I just brim the tank with fresh RON98 stuff and hope it does dilute a bit?

Time to improvise…

An old 60ml syringe and overflow draining fuel line, removed from a said fuel tank. Might be at it a while…

There seem to be a fair old bit of shite inside the fuel tank…

Just taken my bike for a service and he mentioned about recommissioning bikes after they've stood for a while.

He said that one of the worst things you can do is run the engine for 10 minutes every month as the oil emulsifies and allows the inner workings of the engine to corrode. He said you're better off not running it at all.

The oil emulsifies as it mixes with any moisture inside the engine. For the cost of some oil, I'd change the oil, be on the safe side. :thumby:

I use one of these, no need to faff around taking tabks off etc. It works a treat (y)

Once I've got the old stuff out I put a can of super unleaded in as a treat

This^^^^^

Also the engine wears differently when idling compared to when it's under load so repeat periods of running it on idle is not a good idea IMO. You'll also get condensation in your exhaust too. I just clean it, spray it with FS365 put it on a battery tender and cover it up. Then in spring put fresh fuel in it and ride it away. Some shove a bung up the exhausts arse too but that might just be something sexual on their part.

Screwfix came in to the rescue.

About 3.5L worth of fuel in total got drained. The syringe method, had failed. It wasn’t the fuel that got dirty, but a rubber on the end of the plunger it self, started to fall apart. Old fuel will be just fine in the lawn mover.

Off to Costco to get fresh RON98 stuff.

Nice one, but the measurements between the green ties are not quite equal 🤣

My Honda lawn mower won't run on old petrol, it needs super dooper unleaded. If I don't put fresh petrol it in it thows a wobbler and refuses to start even if the petrol in there is super U/L from the previous year. Cantancerous bugger.
