Normaly when starting from cold it starts first go.for the past few days it has turned over but will not fire, after several goes it eventualy starts,i thought it could be battery related so i fitted a hawker battery but still the same.the same problem.when it as got warmed up after a short ride it will start no problem and will continue to do so all day.A friend suggested it could be the starter motor but it seems to be turning the engine alright no strange noises or anything i have checked all the connections, but i can not seem to find where the battery connects to the frame to check that connection.all suggestions will be very much appreciated thank you.

Ian.
p.s. the fuel pump is working as normal.

Could be a shitty coil. Just swapped just to try with a friend who had similar problem - his started instantly after "new" coil so then we knew exacly what the problem was.

So if you have any friends having the 1150 maybe talk him through for a coil swap test. It's a dead easy job if you got the tank QDs installed.

Also the fuel filter can be clogged.

Could try spark plugs. If they are worn the spark may be weak.

its your battery - or more specifically the batteries ability to hold a charge.

as shown by the fact that it works after a run.

get a new one

BMW stuff is Gel type as std - similar to Hawker / red top etc.

Engine Temperature Sender??

How could it be the battery :nenau - it must be good enough to turn the engine over many times until it starts  - plus, he says he's fitted a new one anyway.
I think it must be related to the engine temp. sensor - ie. it's not telling the ECU that the engine is cold and fueling up to suit :nenau - the fuel injection equivalent of the automatic choke! - having said that I don't have any experience of this on the GS - so not much help really, but the fact it's started happening all of a sudden, and it starts fine all day once it's warmed points in this direction?? - sensor u/s or wire off? - somebody on here will know though :thumb

you're right - sorry i'd had a coupla wines - hadn't read it properly - could be fuel related or as you say a sensor - doh !

I thought cold start/idle enrichment was manual on an 1150GS ??

My best guess is a mini coil losing HT when cold (as already stated above).

Could also be down a little on compression when cold so double-check your valve clearances.

Hot engines always start much easier due to the tightening in clearances and the easier atomisation and ignition of fuel.

Startiing problems thank you.

THANK YOU to everybody for your suggestions i think it might be a faulty relay.if i press on relay and press the starter it starts so its either a loose connection or the relay i hope. thanks again.
Ian.

No, Enrichment is NOT manual on 1150

In reply to Pukmeister, the manual lever on the bars ONLY lifts the idle SPEED - you could do the same thing by holding the throttle partly open  - the enrichment is totally under the control of the ECU, and the information fed to it from the various sensors :thumb - hence my suspicions of an engine temp sensor :nenau - anyway, looks like a faulty relay, so hopefully sorted now :thumb

Starter motor checked out.

What i thought was a reley problem was incorrect,i took the bike to RGM.and Roy took the starter to pieces (The advantage of useing a independent) and found that the rotor was coated in dust of the brushes this was the reason the bike would not start, despite fitting a fully charged HAWKER battery the starter was taking all the power from the battery and not leaving enough to fire the engine.Since cleaning the rotor the bike starts from cold every time.
once again thank you to Roy.I hope this problem i had can help somebody else
as a alternative to buying a new starter motor.
Ian.
