I have a 2003 R1150GS and it will not start. the battery has been replaced and is good.

When I press the start button it clicks but the engine does not turn at all. You can see the head light dim as you press the starter, if you hold the starter for a few seconds then the clock will reset.

I can take apart the starter motor but has anyone else experienced this and where was the problem please?

Thanks

Rob

Loose magnets in the starter motor seems likely if the battery leads are OK.

Thanks Warmshed. Leads are good so I'll take off the starter motor and strip.

Are you REALLY sure the battery is good ?

Try jump leads from a car battery just to absolutely rule out the battery before you start stripping stuff.

Wouldn't be the first time a battery was replaced with an equally fecked one.

thanks Oldie - I will take a look

Hi Angus - brand new battery out of the box - I think it was suffering from a lazy starter motor for a couple of months before - I should have stripped down over a quiet weekend

A brand-new battery will only be ~70% charged and may well struggle to turn over a cold GS. May be worth putting it on the charger overnight or jump-starting it the first time.

Check the starter motor for loose magnets. Its almost a certainty. Everybody seems to fanny around with the battery but it sounds like your starter has gradually got worse, especially if the lights dim, that proves its drawing a lot of current.

You can get just the can off Ebay, or I have a used twice motor from Motorworks. Cost me £170.00 but yours for £99 plus postage. Its on Fleabay, just make an offer. :beerjug:

Oh and read the sticky on here or my advert before you buy anything, a Chinese copy is in my opinion not worth fitting, but you all may know different.

I'm betting on loose grease plate in starter

whip the starter out take a look, it's very easy allow an hour and you will have time to strip and clean!

happened to me just recently....two of the magnets got loose....
the magnets got a bit of chewing...but still managed to use to same magnets...my brother in law most of the work...i just supplied him with fluid for hydration....took most of the day to clean the bits...reglued the magnets...and by 8:30 pm or so....the motor started......

I shall strip down the starter on saturday and time myself

I really appreciate all the comments and input, its seems to be fairly consistent as to where to start. thank you all

I had the same symptoms. Stripped the starter and the magnets were goosed. Saw a link on here for a brand new one for under £50 delivered and it solved my problem.

Thanks Oldie. I took this option and made the change quickly. The longest part of the job was releasing the exhaust to get easy access.

I will rebuild the startermotor to give me a replacement. This was a lot cheaper than buying a reconditioned spare
