Hopefully someone will know the answer.

Riding home last night, on a fairly-new-to-me R1200GS, the engine turned off mid corner. I pulled to the side and stopped. Engine wouldn't restart (ignition was still on). Turned ignition off and on again, engine restarted. No warning lights, rode home.

Now, when I turn the ignition on - the amber check engine light illuminates (according to the manual, it's the "malfunction indicator light", which is an illuminated engine symbol, rather than the engine symbol on the LCD screen) . I start engine and it goes off after a couple of seconds. I don't remember if this was a normal sequence before, or if it's something new?

Thanks for any help!

Two things, firstly, check that the battery terminals are tight to eliminate the engine turning off - this seems to be a fairly common problem that I’ve both read about here and had first hand experience of. Secondly, on switching on the ignition the bike cycles through start up checks and eventually extinguishes the engine warning light if all is well. The engine will start even whilst these checks are in progress. A fault will keep the light on and also flash up a warning code or message. ie “detonation imminent get thee to a dealer”.
hope this helps.

Thanks Alan, good idea on the terminals and the engine light coming on then seems normal. Amazing how many times you look at it before something happens, then can't remember what the sequence was!
