What's that round canister thing on the rear of the older silencers?

I bought a silencer yesterday (gold cap) to replace my black capped earlier silencer (2005) just 'cos it was a good price & I think it looks better.

The newer silencer doesn't have the 'pork pie' on the rear!

It's a power valve - makes the earlier 1200's put out approx 15bhp more than the newer ones and still keep within emission/noise regs
