Hi folks
I,m a newbie so hold your horses!
I,ve just had a MOT fail on my '02 1150gs adv with too much play on steering head bearing (handlebars waggle laterally)
Motorrad Edinburgh suggest I replace the entire upper fork cross brace (bearing incl) at £300 +vat - no thanks!
They say that there is no quarantee that replacing the radial bearing alone will solve the prob
This seems amazing as the bearing is not a taper fit (circlipped) and the bike has only done 22K miles
has anyone had a simalar prob and how did you fix it (bearing is about £35 which is somewhat more sensible)
thanks

The bearing is easy to replace...
There is threadlock on the holding bolt so
give it a bit of heat to remove, the top yoke and
bearing come away together, remove cir clip get a socket
right size and tap out, fit new bearing also fit new brass
sleeve that fits between front frame and yoke...
When tightening bolt be careful not to cross thread
very easy to do as i found out :blast

here is diagram of it click

head rest bearing

Had the same problem,
turned out to be a loose centre bolt??
Strange as it also had thread lock on it.
Try to tighten it up first.(Motorad are taking the piss, unless they have found excessive play on outer bearing race)
As mentioned the bearing is easy to change.
I've got a spare if you are stuck, drop me a PM.

I had handlebar waggle, bloody allen screw was loose. Gave it big licks with 100mm key. Torque setting is 130nM, I could not get long bit for torque wrench but tightened it tighter than a very tight thing.

steering head

Well I torqued everything down including bars- went to different MOT station- passed with flying colours- yippee
thanks for the responses folks
