Thieving scum bags :censor: have tried to steal my new GS damaging the steering lock and section of front frame it engages with. The front frame section needs to be replaced but has the VIN welded to it. Does anyone know what the deal is with getting the replacement part?

Horror story here: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79106&highlight=steering+lock but it's quite old and I'm wondering if the situation has changed since then.

I'm waiting for a call from the dealer, but just wondered if anyone has any info in the meantime?

Cheers

Your new headstock frame, won't have a VIN number and your old bikes VIN cannot be re-attached by the dealer, so it'll be a pain when you sell it:blast

Personally I would sooner have no steering lock, than no VIN number

Steering lock, never ever used one:P

Bugger! That's what I suspected.
The dealer has mentioned a 'bodge' fix that allows the undamaged side of the frame lock to still be used (i.e. it locks left but not right) so it looks like this may be the way to go...

Go with that, best outcome:thumb

Quick update: I've spoken to the dealer, a new headstock frame with VIN plate is an option as a special part. Not cheap though :augie

I got my new frame section engraved at a local engravers, he did a good job, not cheap, but he was a nice guy and it was worth it:augie

Must be a rash of this going about coz the same happened to my 2009 GS last week - for a third time in two years so fully comp for me is over £1500. They don't even bother checking whether there is a ground anchor - rip the electronics, break the steering lock, and if that progresses without a hitch then worry about the ground anchor/chain/whatever.

The piece in question is apparently a wishbone shaped item that is a real dog to replace because of the number of connected parts. It can be built up with a bit of welding or one can replace the entire part at a cost of £400 excluding labour (i.e. double that). Locking to the right is sometimes tricky on the sidestand, so my choice is to go without a steering lock from now on and use a disk lock for casual parking. PITA.

Happened to me a couple of christmas's ago, came back after the holidays, steering lock broken and wires hanging out from the bike.

Got it brought to a dealer and it turned out the subframe was cracked when they used a crowbar to break the steering lock.

Ended up with a 2,000 euro bill, covered by insurance but still a pain (on most policies, attempted theft doesn't affect the NCB over here).

I never use my steering lock anymore, chain and/or disk lock when parking it up, replacing an ignition barrel is a lot cheaper.

Never checked the frame number, but I'm assuming it's the same as before, must check it next time I'm in the garage!

These frame sections with registration regularily sell on ebay.de for €2000 ??
Its only a bit of steel, take it to an engineer to repair the lock stop. and repaint, job done. there are plenty of engineers on here that can do it.
