My steering lock is refusing to engage - both on left and right lock. The key just meets a firm resistance and won't turn any further to engage it. Any ideas? Is there any recommended cleaner/lubricant for this - there's no mention in the service manual.

I initially had the same problem.... the steering lock doesn't engage at 'maximum lock' - with the bars turned fully to the left or right....

You'll need to turn the bars back slightly to get them in the right position to allow the lock to engage.....

I have had the bike 18 months now and its worked perfectly until now so I know the technique. I'm going to need to get up underneath and work out how the pins work to lock the steering as by feel, the key just won't turn the pin down. It might just be corrosion of the pin stopping it moving down into the holes in the headstock (I assume). The £50 BMW service manual has nothing in it.

have you got a Baglux tank Harness on, check the head stock strap is not in the mechanism. How do I know this? doh

Nope, nothing is in the way. It seems to either be the physical key mechanism in the ignition barrel or the pin is physically stuck and won't engage.

I guess mechanism as F650GS:nenau if so maybe some bugger has had a go at it to break the steering lock and buggered up the pin???
