How does the steering lock work?

The key 'turns' to the left, and was expecting to push the barrel in to make a peg locate with a hole in the steerer tube.
It will not push in.:(

Any clues?

Thanks

'wiggle' (the handlebars, that is) and gently push the key in.
if that dont work, try some WD40 on the offending bits.
many owners dont use the steering lock and it can get sticky.

On my ST, the hole for the peg seems to present a little way back from full right hand lock, i.e. I can't push the lock in if the bars are on full lock, but I can if I turn the bars back a little towards the straight ahead position (say a couple of inches measured at bar end).

Sorted.

Sprayed with WD40.It wasn't gummed up from lack of use....but.....

Spent the afternoon unbodging a previous owners bodge up.

I bought the bike as a project and the frame had been powder coated. The drop down lock cover had been removed by 'drilling' out the hardened steel pin. Then another hole had been drilled and tapped M4 into the left side of the lug ....at an angle, breaking through the lug and 'pinching' the brass slider preventing it from pushing in!!! The inside of the frame lug had powder inside it as well, making things very tight.

So have made up an M4 screw, shortened than the original, with a very small and shallow round head just like the original pin would have been. This is superglued in position. Also, cleaned out the powder with a 3/16" scraper.

I must be dedicated to the cause after that afternoon of fun.

it remminds me of when the key broke off in the streering lock of my r100gs and it was fun to drill out the lock. so i could ride it. never refitted a new one as a lock on the wheel is just as good.
